I have a love-hate relationship with advertising and marketing. That feeling about Commercial Creativity is never closer to the surface than at this time of the year, when Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity comes around again. By Commercial Creativity I mean the loosely defined name given to a group of activities from the marketing function in a business, to those who help those marketers do what they need to do, the advertising, media and branding agencies and everything in between. I was for a long time of this world: Chief Strategy Officer of EMEA, Global EXCO, Global Creative Council for the then named Y&R - VMLY&R (and now VML!) and then Chief Marketing Officer for the United Nations World Food Programme. I did lots of things in those roles, some of those are still part of my life, but they are no longer all of my life. This is an exploration of the good, bad and ugly of the industry, the importance of metas and what you might do if you want to try something different. I’ve recently come across way too many people saying ‘Kaam chal rha hai’ when I ask them about work. I’ve also come to think the reason it's just survival for them, is often themselves. I know for a fact I was my own weak link. I’d lost all purpose in life. When doing the bare minimum got me a ‘good job’, I never felt the need to do anything beyond that. Until I read something which caught my eye: Get so good they can’t ignore you. Were people ignoring me? Not really. But I never gave them a reason to notice me either. And that's when I realized why I was okay with normalcy - it was comfortable. Doing something that gets the job done, was better than me having to face ‘not making it’. What if I’m all talk? What if my best effort isn’t going to be enough? What if I suck at this? So do something about it you, lil shit. A slap in the face was all I needed from myself, evidently. To start giving a damn about achieving something in life. I took a few exams, got into the college I wanted, and got into the agency I wanted. Went beyond the line of duty to practice what I do, started actively noticing the world around me, and acting on feedback instead of just saying ‘they don’t get it’. Won’t you look at that? I showed up. Sometimes the ‘why’ behind our passion doesn’t come easy, but we can still vow to get better at what we do. You don't have to be your best every day, just need to show up and do your best. And that's often much more than most people who settle are doing (I say that from first-hand experience). So sure, kaam chal rha hai - but what if it could be better? It might help you get promoted like I got to Associate Manager - Brand Strategy at Dentsu Creative. If not, you're on your way.

I am thrilled to share that as I celebrate 12 incredible years at Mindshare SG, my journey continues with a new chapter as I step into the role of Business Director.
