𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 🎧 Not long ago, I started getting ready for a unique event in the UK this Easter, with a group of impressive men. Even before the event, our online meetings have been eye-opening, especially about how we listen. 👂 Listening isn't just about hearing words; it's about what we're thinking when we're hearing. ALWAYS (!), without realizing it, we listen through a mental filter that changes how we understand what's being said. It's like wearing a VR headset that we do not know we are wearing! I noticed this myself during one of our sessions. The main leader couldn't make it, and his associate had to step in. It took me a while before I caught myself thinking, "Wouldn't this be better if our usual leader was here?" For the whole I was listening through this filter! This low quality of listening stopped me from getting as much out of the session as I could have. Once I realized this, I shared my thoughts with the group. This opened up a conversation, and many noticed that they felt the same way and had been listening through the same filter! They were astonished! By acknowledging this filter, we were able to move past it and the insights from the session were pure gold. This experience taught me a lot about the importance of how we listen - once more and in direct experience. By being aware of and setting aside our filters, we can connect more deeply and get more from our conversations. I encourage you to think about your own listening. 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐢𝐞, 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐕𝐑 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬, '𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐭?'” 🤔 I recently encountered this thought-provoking sentence in an advertisement while strolling through Berlin-Mitte. As a coach, I thought: “What a great coaching intervention it would be!” Here is why: 1. 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: This sentence prompts us to step into the shoes of someone else – in this case, our "deceased-self." How would you look at your life from this perspective? 💡 2. 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞: The idea that someone might inquire about our experience after death serves as a reminder of life’s finiteness. Moreover, in the described situation, life wouldnt be over yet; we would have the opportunity to alter things in real life following the VR experience of the life´s end. What changes would you make? 📜 3. 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: The introduction of a VR experience into a coaching intervention is particularly compelling to me as it encourages contemplation on what is "real" to us. How sure can you be that what seems to be "real" to you is also real to others? 🤷♂️ Also: Why do we take some aspects of live so seriously and not others? How might our perspectives change if life were merely a VR experience, or would they remain unchanged? It prompts me to reconsider my goals, priorities, and values – what truly matters to you? 4. 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: How close are we to being able to live an entire life in a virtual world? Would this diminish or enhance the significance of real live? If given the choice between living our "dream" in a virtual world or persevering through real-world challenges, what would you choose, and why? 🤖 In summary, this thought experiment exemplifies the power and inspiration inherent in language and thought-provoking questions.
