Basic document for understanding audit methodologies and concepts for non financial peoples

This took quite a bit of brainpower to get through, but it is an interesting read if you work in Internal Audit. Referencing Sisyphus in the title might paint a bleak picture (as you may recall, he’s the fellow in Greek mythology who was sentenced to an eternity of rolling a stone up a hill only to have it roll back down before it reached the top), but I thought the conclusion and acknowledgment of the constant task of “deparadoxifying” Internal Audit was relatable. The author concludes: 1- Internal Auditors “are to be both independent and fierce warriors, and consoling and warm” 2-Internal Auditors are “both part of the organization, and separate from the organization.” 3-Internal Audit’s “performance was mainly presented through their audit report which was to be critical and insightful, but not too critical.” “In other words, the work of the internal auditors is a constant balancing act.” — Ingrid Gustafsson Nordin #internalaudit

During the audit, auditors should listen actively and empathetically to the auditee and other parties involved. This means paying attention to what they say, how they say it, and why they say it. It also means acknowledging their feelings, concerns, and perspectives, and showing respect and appreciation. By listening and empathizing, auditors can build trust, rapport, and cooperation, as well as identify the root causes and impacts of any audit issues or findings.

Actions may speak louder than words, yet words have a powerful way of impacting and shaping our perceptions. The same is true when it comes to internal auditors and audit reports. Besides the business acumen and strategic understanding, the words (language) internal auditors use in the audit reports and meetings, may go a long way in creating that position of Internal Audit as value-driving trusted advisors.
