In addition, I also learned topology optimization, DFAM staircase, and design considerations. The courses also included extensive capstone projects to be completed based on the obtained knowledge

Can regional alliances boost science education? In southeastern Tennessee, an alliance of local schools, businesses, universities, and other groups has come together to improve science teaching and learning. The alliance provides teachers with resources, including a technology lending library and classes on how to use 3D printers, microcomputers and more. The story of cooperation and collaboration is told in an editorial in ISSUES in Science and Technology. The regional alliance is an exemplar of the ideas advanced in the report "Call to Action for Science Education" from the Board on Science Education. Neil combined his PhD with being the chairman of a highly innovative SME- Romar Engineering and his doctorate highlights how to use advanced learning technologies - Evolutionary Algorithms to drive innovation in manufacturing 🎓 Excited to share insights from my PhD journey! 🌐 Title: "Techno-economic analysis of conformal tooling via hybrid manufacturing" 🔍 Thesis Abstract: Injection moulding, a cornerstone in polymer manufacturing, thrives on efficiency. However, the traditional design of injection moulding tools often results in costly redesigns post-prototype testing. My research introduces a groundbreaking generative design approach to tooling, specifically focusing on Conformal Cooling Channels (CCCs). These 'smart' CCCs, crucial for optimal performance, are crafted using a novel combination of evolution-based optimisation and iterative routing methods. 🌟 Major Innovation: The application of generative design in Injection Moulding (IM) tooling has yielded a tool capable of reducing cooling times by up to 50%, a game-changer for part consistency, accuracy, and manufacturing cycle time. 💡 Implications: To bring these advanced designs to life, I explored Hybrid Manufacturing (HM), a fusion of additive and subtractive technologies. This approach not only enhances productivity but also meets the manufacturing requirements of complex geometries. 🔄 GD + HM = Substantial Benefits: The synergy between generative design and hybrid manufacturing promises significant returns on investment for IM tool designs. The economic assessment of the sample part reveals a minimum of 80,000 moulded parts is required to offset the higher costs of hybrid manufacturing, with a predicted 127% ROI within a year for producing 100,000 parts annually. 🌐 Impact on Australian Manufacturing: With high labour and manufacturing costs in Australia, the proposed methodology offers a cost-effective solution, potentially revolutionising the tool design and manufacturing landscape. 📈 Next Steps: As I embark on raising the profile of Romar Engineering, I'm eager to explore commercial and academic collaborations. Meet Robert Sansone, A natural born engineer. From animatronic hands to high-speed running boots and a go-kart that can reach speeds of more than 70 miles per hour, I came across an article on this Florida-based inventor who estimates he’s completed at least 60 engineering projects in his spare time. And he’s only 17 years old. The highschooler had heard of a type of electric motor—the synchronous reluctance motor—that doesn’t use these rare-earth materials. This kind of motor is currently used for pumps and fans, but it isn’t powerful enough by itself to be used in an electric vehicle. So, Sansone started brainstorming ways he could improve its performance. Over the course of a year, Sansone created a prototype of a novel synchronous reluctance motor that had greater rotational force—or torque—and efficiency than existing ones. The prototype was made from 3-D printed plastic, copper wires and a steel rotor and tested using a variety of meters to measure power and a laser tachometer to determine the motor’s rotational speed. His work earned him first prize, and $75,000 in winnings, at this year’s Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the largest international high school STEM competition. His one line that caught my attention the most is “With that sustainability issue, I wanted to tackle it, and try and design a different motor.” This is the kind of enthusiasm that is much needed for not only electrical but every kind of industry. #innovation #enthusiasm #article #electricmotors #motores

Last Saturday I presented my research work on "Integrated Hardware and Software Codesign for Controlling Underactuated Aerial Robots" at the Northeast Systems and Control Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania. My research efforts for the past year focused on understanding and implementing parallel design for the control of aerial robots and specifically more complex control for multirotors. This design removes the hierarchical structure for multirotors with a Raspberry Pi Compute Module and a custom printed circuit board (made with Altium® Designer) in the hardware stack and a soft real time operating system with ros2_control (developed by Open Robotics) in the software stack. I was delighted to have great conversations about this shift and how this codesign can enable a better platform for complex control with more time for design and experiment planning. The design focuses on leveraging control techniques and there were interesting questions on its use for a learning or artificial intelligence based implementation. I am excited to see what may develop from this project and design approach when applied to additional robot systems. I would like to thank Jake Welde for bringing me in to collaborate on the overall aerial manipulator project, Vijay Kumar for supporting this effort in the GRASP Lab, and Fernando Cladera for assistance with PCB design reviews.
