💖 Join me in celebrating National Women's Health Week! 🩺 As the local Go Red for Women Director with the American Heart Association, every day I think about the importance of women's health. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. While it kills more women than all forms of cancer combined, only 44% of women recognize that cardiovascular disease is their greatest health threat The theme of #NationalWomensHealthWeek this year is "Empowering Women, Cultivating Health: Celebrating Voices, Wellness, and Resilience." The simple truth is- most cardiac and stroke events can be prevented through education and lifestyle changes, such as moving more, eating smart, and managing blood pressure. We know that women face unique health issues at every age and stage of their lives and education is critical to empowering women to be their own health advocates. I'm proud to share this video of a handful of incredible survivors and voices for women's heart health. Two really powerful lines in this video continue to stick with me: 💬 "As I got older, I made the decision to put my health first so I could be there for all of my son's special firsts" 💬 "I've made it this far, and I still have so much more I want to experience in life. That's why as I age and change, so do the ways I care for my heart health." When we come together and empower each other, women are unstoppable. Self-care is NOT selfish! Join me in spreading awareness and support for women's health this week and beyond. Together, we can make a difference! #NationalWomensHealthWeek #WomenEmpowerment #HealthEquity 🌺💪🏽🩺 https://lnkd.in/erJ3Fr_s

As a society and healthcare professionals need to better address the disparities faced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women when it comes to healthcare. These disparities are often rooted in implicit biases within the healthcare system, leading to unequal access to healthcare, higher mortality rates, and increased complication rates. These unconscious attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes often manifest in a variety of ways, ranging from assumptions made about pain levels to differences in medical care provided. Let’s stop the disparities. Let’s stop the bias. Let’s start making a difference in the lives of these women! Better access to healthcare, improved knowledge of healthcare professionals such as physical therapists, and better knowledge provided to women can help end these injustices. Helps us in our mission to educate, engage, and empower women. www.gwhi.org volunteer: [email protected] or DM us! Have you encountered these biases in the medical community? Share your story with us in the comments so we can raise awareness!

𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡: 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 Earlier this week, I was invited to speak at a panel discussion on women's health organized by the engaged youth team at Forandringshuset Grønland. It was an incredibly insightful experience, diving deep into key issues affecting women's physical and mental well-being. During our lively discussions, we covered multiple fundamental topics, such as: 🔬 The lack of research on women's health, illustrated by notable disparities in funding, clinical trials, and published studies; 🚫 Systemic barriers to accessing healthcare; 🆘 Discrimination in the form of racism, fat shaming, ageism, and other traumatizing experiences women face in the healthcare system. Addressing these barriers to fair treatment in the health sector requires a multifaceted approach, including policy changes, improved healthcare infrastructure, education, and efforts to combat stigma and discrimination, ensuring that all women have equitable access to the healthcare they need. I was truly inspired by the collective determination, expertise, and meaningful engagement of everyone involved. Thank you Elisabeth Torstensen Sward, Mina from Kvinnefronten, Maria Qureshi (Arbeiderpartiet) and Attia Mirza Mehmood (Sosialistisk Venstreparti). Looking forward to new opportunities for collaboration in the future! #WomensHealth #Healthcare #MentalHealth #Discrimination #HealthEquity #Advocacy #PanelDiscussion

Content note – this post discusses death and grief Yesterday we hosted a conference on women’s health at The King's Fund. A theme of the day – and of the breakout session I chaired – was ensuring women are listened to by health care professionals. In the session, we had a VCS leader and campaigner talking about experiences where women haven’t been listened to, and a GP and a NHS CEO in conversation with her about the issues and the changes needed. The GP also shared some of her lived experience, and the conversation highlighted the inefficiency of not listening to women and the distress it can cause. The conversation around improvement focused on a need for impatience and a sense of urgency to address this, a focus on people in their whole contexts and a need for services and professionals to stay curious. It was a really insightful and honest conversation, and it felt so good to talk about these things with an audience of interested health system professionals. Yesterday evening, I heard the news that a mutual on Twitter (someone I follow and followed me, we’d never met but had engaged with each others’ content) had died. Her last tweets were about trying to seek help and feeling left alone to deal with her health issues. We had a lot of similarities – similar age, lesbian identity, academic, interest in trauma and mental health. The news was like a physical weight on me, heavy, not just unexpected because of who she was, but also how affected I felt despite having only had a fleeting online connection with her. I think part of this was how much it resonated with the topics we were discussing in my panel. Introducing the session, I mentioned one of my own experiences of not being heard, and made a comment about the range of impacts, from annoying, to actively dangerous. This was a real life example of that danger – and a woman is now dead because of it. She deserved so much better. She’s not the first, she sadly won’t be the last. And it’s so vital we keep highlighting and supporting those who advocate on these issues and try to change them. This is life or death. Rest in peace, @TraumaPHDandMe
Great to be part of The King's Fund conference on women's health today. I chaired a panel with a brilliant group of people: Farzana Hussain, toby lewis, and Eleanor Lisney from Sisters of Frida, talking about ensuring women are listened to by health care professionals. it was so helpful to hear lived experiences of this and the ways health and care services might improve. The importance of understanding a person's whole context, and taking an intersectional lens, was really central. The event overall was also brilliant - thanks to excellent colleagues like Caroline Ashmore for making it run so smoothly!
