Last week we took time out to celebrate 15 years... We both stepped away from our roles at work, home, and everything in-between to spend 2 days in Bath. No lavish gifts and fuss. But I really enjoyed it…for so many reasons. It gave us the space to: reflect... 5 moves, 3 children, 3 continents connect...regardless of my unwanted cold (hence no photo even taken in Bath) and appreciate...our health, family, careers, and all the small things we often take for granted. It’s important to celebrate the milestones and big wins, but what about the small stuff in between? And does it need to look like a “big deal”? Sometimes it’s a simple thank you or compliment… What might you CELEBRATE this week? About you and / or your team? As we rapidly approach 2024, what and how might you CELEBRATE you and your team NOW to activate and embed more “natural” reflection, connection, & appreciation in the year to come? There are always ups and downs, but it’s a journey…enjoy it.

Final thoughts. 🙏🏼 Please let people celebrate the new year. For many it means making it through a rough year. It could mean healing. It could mean growth. It could be symbolic or noteworthy for them. You don’t need to tell them they can “start any time”. They know that. But let people be. You don’t know what they’re going through. Be supportive or walk away. 🏆 You are successful. The hardships may seem like otherwise. Seeing everyone’s end of year reflections may make you feel less. But everyone is their own journey. Even I look at everyone’s successes and feel like it’s not enough. But stop. Breathe. You are successful. 💜 I’m extremely thankful for the community we have here. In a noisy world, it brings me joy that little ol’ me gets to be around some of the coolest people. I’m thankful for your kindness, friendship, support, laughs, and silliness. Thanks for blending the professional and fun. ☀️ Practical Positivity and growth mindset will still be my vibe. I’m doubling down on blocking out negativity and recruiter hate. Top 3 lessons for my students: take it slow (breathe), respect your time, and ask for help.

The 3 lessons Heinz share here almost perfectly map to my own life and career. Sharing so that younger devs might benefit from this hard-earned knowledge, instead of taking the hits and giving the sacrifices to learn it themselves. :)

She’s amazing, isn’t she? 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Our High-Involvement Planning, 18 month Forecast went gooood: - welcomed our new teammates - reviewed Mission, Vision, Values, and our focus on serving underserved populations through Federally Qualified Health Centers - reported out on our internal NPS scores - economic & industry outlooks - financial report for period-ending 6/30 (yes, we close the books this fast) - great contributions and market analysis from our Business Development Team - solid work on emerging markets and campaign strategy from our CRO - foundational support from the team for our decision to fund 2 new non-profits at 7-figure levels. - updates on fresh new awards (sshh, secret), our new facility, some gov’t certs, our new strategic partnerships, etc. Results: - high engagement from our on-site and remote teammates (thanks Slido) - an Early Confidence score of 4.3 (out of 5) on a 2025 Sales Forecast of $45mm Next: Over the next 60 days, we will tackle two parallel efforts, HIP 2025 Plan phase, and planning for Period 3 Mini-games (MGs) and our leadership’s Individual Strategic Projects (ISPs). I’ll keep you in the loop. PS: Plus, an early gain-share day (below, our fav day, especially Amanda!) We play The Great Game of Business and everyone (including C-Suite) has an even opportunity to earn a 20% gain-share (earn over and above market wages and our incredible benefits, payable quarterly.) For a teammate earning $25/hr, that’s over $10k extra a year, or an additional 2.5 months, or 10 weeks of pay. 1 Year Later... It has been a year since my last day at Verizon and what a year it has been! This past year, I prioritized my self-care. Whatever that needed to be at the moment. Sometimes, that meant being busy, sometimes resting, sometimes doing a project, and sometimes thinking and writing. This was a year of learning and unlearning. There were moments of pure happiness and crippling fear. I’m thankful for this journey and the amazing friends and family I have to support me. My success metrics have shifted significantly. I used to look at compensation, title, year end ratings, how much work I accomplished, etc. Now I look at percentage of happiness.  I’m generally a happy person,but I can honestly say I am sitting at a higher percentage than I was a year ago. The best part is that I am in control of that number. I can remove things from the equation to increase the percentage all the time. If something is not serving my happiness, it gets removed, or in the cases where I can’t remove it, I come up with ways to limit the impact it has on me. It’s hard !!!! But it’s the best work I can do for myself! Recently, I saw a friend. I was talking about my small business when she stopped me and said, “Look how happy you are. I haven’t seen this version of Chris in years.” It’s amazing when others notice, too 😊 I added a few other things to my year-end performance review—it feels like a “leading rating” to me! ✅ Enjoyed some amazing vacations. ✅ Wrote and published my first book  ✅ Packed up and sold our home ✅ Relocated to the Jersey Shore ✅ Laid the foundation and significantly grew my small business  ✅ Filled my calendar with countless catch-up calls, videos, and lunches, reconnecting with amazing people  ✅ Many therapy sessions deconstructing what I want to carry forward and leave behind from my corporate career I think the smile is a bit different in the pictures. Let's go, Year 2 !!!

The Yellow Fish turns 8 today!! Happy Birthday to Cohley. I'll give you 8 random thoughts / highlights that've popped into my head today as I've reflected back on our first 8 years doing this.... 1. The most rewarding part of the journey is doing it with great colleagues. Hat tip to my friend and co-founder Erik Graber, who's both the smartest and most relentless person I know. And thank you to Landon Sturm, who's the heart and soul of the company. 2. We may have quit after a year if we hadn't landed an agreement with Kohl's. Our champion on that deal was none other than our longest tenured and one of our most valuable employees, Jennifer Wang. 3. Happy customers create more customers, and our Customer Success function is nothing short of elite. Among the commitments that the CS team makes is that we visit our top customers in person, regardless of whether they're here in NYC or in rural Ohio. That, along with a million other small but important things, make that team special. (CC: Erin McCarthy) 4. Our early hires were either crazy or borderline masochists for agreeing to join a company of our size, lacking any sort of structure or formal training. They helped set the culture, got us up and running, and a handful of them are still with us years later. (CC: David Hughes). 5. We've been beyond lucky with our investors. After a F&F round, Dave Lambert at Right Side Capital Management has led or co-led every round we've done. Dave's been hugely influential and supportive from the beginning, and he took a chance on us when we didn't even know how to calculate MRR properly (embarrassing). In the last few years Pat Matthews at Active Capital has been another stabilizing, thoughtful, and encouraging voice in our board room. 6. The most important development in Cohley's 8 year history (so far) was identifying our ICP. I love SMBs, but a few years ago it became clear that our offering fit 100X better with consumer brands doing north of $10M/yr. Our cohort-specific data has gotten a lot more precise since that binary split was identified, but putting ourselves in a position to get net revenue retention to 100%+ is the reason we are where we are today. 7. We're nothing without our extensive community of Creators. Thanks to Michelle Green for being a strong advocate for the Creator, going out of her way to spend time and energy making sure that their UX is as simple and effective as it can be. 8. It took me a years to realize this, but going all-in on a startup requires sacrifice and support from the families of everyone involved. The days can be agonizing, and we're not the type of company that leaves their laptops at work. My wife Allison has been hugely supportive, playing out scenarios and thinking through tough situations with even after her long days working at a charter school while also taking care of baby Maggie. Thanks to everyone that's contributed to this special run, I couldn't fit everyone in here but you know who you are.
