Like others, I have experienced a major influx of Inmail and emails from recruiters since I retired my #opentowork banner and started at Fruth Group. The irony isn't lost on me, and for some reason, even in the current market, with an endless amount of non-performance-based layoffs like mine last February, there's still bias when it comes to someone's employment status. There seems to be an idea that employed people are more employable. "All the good ones are taken." This couldn't be any farther from the truth. I try to do my part by forwarding these comms to someone on the search and often referring the recruiter to a colleague and writing a sentence or two about what makes their working style and output remarkable. It's something we can all do that takes five minutes and can help get more talented people in front of recruiters and hiring managers. So instead of hitting delete, take five and forward that baby to someone who might be interested. Extra points for sending the recruiter a quick referral, something most of them appreciate.

I love this suggestion! And I just took down my open to work banner this week as a test after reading a career coach's post about talking to a recruiter who never pursued those with the banner up because they "were only interested in pursuing top talent." Thankfully the career coach lambasted the recruiter's position as asinine and said to keep the banner up, but after reading through the numerous comments, there was more than a bit of anecdotal evidence that it was somewhat true. Multiple people started seeing more recruiter outreach after dropping the banner (unemployed or not). Exasperating.

I love this Naomi. Simple and quick but with the potential to be so powerful.
