Naomi Titleman’s Post

Why is HR making us so miserable? ICYMI, the latest viral article in the NYT covering the woes of HR ("So, Human Resources Is Making You Miserable?"), was covered in many conversations, podcasts and social posts the past few weeks. Apparently we are not just making ourselves miserable (which we are) but we are making OTHERS miserable, too. That’s not what we empathetic, people pleasers aim to do. Some quotes from the article: - “HR can feel like a fool’s errand sometimes” and - “We have been putting out fires with cans of gasoline” - Kyle Lagunas - “a lot of employees look at us as inherently evil.” - Hebba Youssef Ugh. YES our profession has been through the wringer the past few years and YES we have every right and need to vent. BUT we also have the power to change the narrative. Is there an opportunity to: - rethink and reframe our relationships with our CEOs and leadership teams? - bring our colleagues "in the tent" earlier to co-create? - better align our products and services to desired outcomes (good-bye 9-box)? - ensure change leadership is part of the thing (it is essential to scaling and sustaining it!), not an afterthought? - better contract to ensure boundaries, priorities and capacity are managed transparently? We are at the forefront of all that touches “people” in our organizations, which is pretty much everything. That's an incredible opportunity to drive major business impact. Mark Edgar and I commiserate (a bit) and offer some solutions in this week's episode of the foHRsight podcast - listen to the full episode wherever you get yours. PS if you're looking for a community of cross-border forward-thinking CHROs and Sr. Talent and HRBP Leaders, with whom you can vent and also make work better, we may know the place 😉 - reach out for details on our upcoming fall cohorts.

Oh man... The tendency to innovate in a corner?? This struck me like an arrow in the gut. Such a great callout. Thank you for bringing some introspection to this conversation. It's gone viral because it stings, but I so appreciate you taking this as a CTA rather than a sob story. <3
