“No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they’ve never experienced.” Sir David Attenborough It’s one of the reasons that the Homeward Bound global leadership initiative includes an expedition to Antarctica. I am currently voyaging as part of the Homeward Bound faculty with 109 women and non-binary people with a STEMM background collaborating to change the leadership model for a sustainable future. Between landings on the Antarctic Peninsular and the surrounding islands, where we experience the mind-blowing Narnia-like beauty of the world’s coldest, driest, most pristine wilderness and its captivating wildlife, we are engaged in our onboard programme. This comprises strategy, visibility and leadership workshops and sessions extending our understanding of the importance of this continent. It provides a unique experience of being removed from our daily lives, being immersed in the awe of Antarctica and most importantly, creating a visceral emotional response that goes beyond an intellectual understanding that inspires action to protect our future. Emerging from this is a series of connections and collaborations on significant challenges facing us and our world. For the last eight years, since its conception by Fabian Dattner in 2015, I have been strategy lead, supporting this extraordinary initiative to elevate, empower and amplify the individual and collective impact of the HB community. We have limited time and resources, so we are compelled to be strategic leaders, whether on a ship in Antarctica or back in our daily personal or professional lives. So, on this voyage we’ve explored what strategic leadership means for us as individuals, in how we collaborate together and how we translate intention into action and impactful outcomes. As we journey back from the Antarctic Peninsular we are reflecting on what we’ve learned about Antarctica, from the expedition in Antarctica and how this informs our practice of strategic leadership. We hope that we return home from this incredibly intense and overwhelmingly stimulating expedition with a strategic mindset to lead, influence and shape our future. Because “If not us, who? Destination Stewardship Principles In Action .... Presentation by Zita Cobb, Shorefast's CEO and Founder, Inn Keeper of the Fogo Island Inn. Zita delivers an impactful, moving presentation at the Ivey Business School on the importance of local leadership in the places we live.   In the late 1960s, the residents of Fogo Island had to make a life-altering decision due to a pending collapse of their inshore fishing industry: to leave their home and resettle off the island or stay and find a new way to develop their economy for long term sustainability. Zita notes "How Leaders are the deepest believers and the local Fogo Island community of leaders believed in the inherent value of their place and if given half a chance, they could flourish. They believed it and therefore saw it and were able to come together and work for it". Shaping up to be a great IWD conversation. What skills and leadership are needed for #protectedlandscapes in this our 75th year? What can women’s approach to leading bring to the table?

What inspires people to pay to give of their time and talent? A clear mission is probably a key component of the attraction, but what else? In my experience, my Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo leadership, from Assistant Captains to Committee Chairs and Directors have shown respect, and that has made all the difference. Respect for our time, shown through bringing food and sending messages of thanks following meetings and events. Respect for our dignity, shown through greeting us regardless of our status or affiliation ("affiliation" might also be a euphemism for "clique"). Respect for our talents, shown by interviewing us for committees and assigning us where we will add the most value (increasing the likelihood we will shine and be appreciated, and, in turn, be excited to contribute more in a cycle of giving excellence).
