The No. 1 reason for Oracle's HQ relocation to Nashville? The city's booming $67.91 billion health care industry. With over 300,000 jobs in the sector and HCA Healthcare based in Nashville, many health care and tech companies have moved their headquarters to take advantage of the city's ecosystem. “Larry Ellison’s proclamation underscores Nashville’s role in advancing the tech giant’s health care business. This HQ relocation will spur more growth of health tech companies and tech talent in our region. Oracle's decision further affirms Nashville's status as the Health Care City, the premier destination for companies, investors and innovators who want to improve health care,” said Apryl Childs-Potter, president, Nashville Healthcare Council. Interesting move by Oracle to build its headquarters in Nashville, consistent with the idea that location still matters. Despite the rise in remote work, there are benefits of co-location.🚀 To be sure, there's a lot of work that can be done remotely. But there are also large co-location benefits that arise, particularly in sectors where there are knowledge spillovers and coordination costs (cc the work by Nick Bloom, Jose Maria Barrero, Steve Davis, among others). Healthcare is a great example because services vary markedly in quality and technology is playing an increasing large role in the delivery and monitoring of care. It'll be interesting to track the continuing economic development in Nashville and the surrounding rural areas as more companies consider expanding or re-locating their HQ. #economicdevelopment #nashville #oracle https://lnkd.in/g6mcBr8Q

Executive Director, Blue Spoon Consulting® / The Global Leader in Positioning Strategy at a System Level
No. And look no further than this 'analysis' to understand why, if your goal is original perspective, you don't really need to invest in airfare to Los Angeles: "The annual event, co-produced by HLTH and CHIME, targets the healthcare industry C-suite in innovation and technology with an agenda that’s heavy on panels and presentations. Topics of discussion will include disruptors in the healthcare space, AI, data management and interoperability, policy, sustainability, and digital health." In other words, nothing particularly novel. "The conference comes at a crucial time for the industry. With tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft and retail giants like Amazon, Walmart, and Walgreens applying new ideas to the healthcare space and a current economy that puts a premium of reducing costs and finding an immediate ROI, health systems and hospitals are under a lot of pressure to do better...." You can't tech your way to fixing healthcare. And in the "applying new ideas" department, 'Amazon cuts hundreds of jobs in Pharmacy, One Medical units' while 'Walgreens stock plunges after drugstore chain slashes quarterly dividend nearly in half' were the headlines last month. So a bit of a head-scratcher from the disrupters. But "a premium on reducing costs and finding an immediate ROI" is probably the nut of The Problem. As long as healthcare is impaled on the twin horns of this weird economic dysfunction, with zero patience and short attention span theater, content with #groupthink at a staggering level, safely swimming in the shallows, a $4 trillion system of markets will stay stuck in structural stalemate, trapped by the kinetics of a massive flywheel that no one entity has the power to break. It's time to sweep the old concepts out of the saddle. The 'production of health' isn't the same economic objective as 'reducing costs'. The latter has been tried and analyzed for decades, spinning out a kind of strategic atrophy that feeds on itself as an infinitely recursive loop, invariably leading back to perpetual crisis and model collapse for all but a handful. The former has never been attempted as a big innovation agenda, one with the power to shift the center-of-gravity for economic competition, at scale. For a change in orientation, see link in comments to a market commentary published by Blue Spoon Consulting last week in Fortune. #TheBigStrategicRotation via Eric Wicklund @ HealthLeaders

As the healthcare sector continues to navigate staffing challenges, it is crucial to identify critical productivity bottlenecks where technology-enabled platforms can play a significant role. By leveraging these platforms, providers can achieve better productivity and reduce administrative and staffing burden, ultimately becoming more accessible to a wider patient network. In alignment with the Nashville Health Care Council's mission to address the skill deficit, particularly in the field of Mental and Behavioral Health, our goal is to contribute to this effort in our own capacity. We recognize the importance of utilizing technology to improve efficiencies and address staffing challenges in order to better serve patients and the community at large. By investing in and implementing technology-enabled solutions, healthcare providers can optimize their operations, streamline processes, and ultimately enhance their ability to meet the growing demands for healthcare services. This, in turn, will allow for a more efficient and effective allocation of resources, ensuring that patients receive the care they need in a timely and accessible manner. Sharing an interesting blog on this subject. Source: Nashville Healthcare Council https://lnkd.in/gpgJkE6A

Emory Healthcare made an underrated and very bold move that runs contrary to all our irrationally predictable human nature. They eliminated hospital-specific CEOs since those roles are incented to compete against each other just as much as they compete against rival hospitals. Providence Health System in Oregon made a similar move in the late 90's with program line (heart, cancer, etc.) leadership and it allowed for a true health system that is best positioned to lower costs and be efficient. Eliminating these leadership roles is really hard since the hospitals have to trust a single leader who is working with their other system hospitals that used to compete. It requires organizational strength, belief, and culture to make these right decisions. Congratulations Emory on your leadership. This post will wrap up with a throw down to the LinkedIn community. There are too many posts that take too much effort to point out what's wrong in healthcare. These posts don't solve problem, exacerbate social media rage, and are too easy to write. If you post what's wrong in healthcare, point out who's doing something right (besides your own company). If you have written consecutive posts about what's wrong, research and highlight something that someone else did well. https://lnkd.in/gaJXnbJY
