Good piece on Wonkhe this morning about the current pause and review of Level 3 qualifications. Interesting to see the issues set out from the HE end of the telescope, having engaged with this more from the FE perspective. As the review progresses, definitely one of those issues that benefits from a holistic tertiary perspective:
The end of BTECs has been paused, so now what? | Wonkhe

Have been participating in 16th European Space Conference in Brussels - strapline: “Meet the Leaders - Shape Europe’s Future”. Very inspiring experience. 2023 Seville Space summit seen as turning point heralding new era in which space threads society and recognising need for transformation of European space ecosystem for increased autonomy, agility, commercial success, sustainability. No shortage of leaders present - political, space (obvs ESA in force), industrial, banking / investment, think tanks. But notably the voice of science was muted. No active science leader on any of the main panels. Yet for 50y science - and the technology it has catalysed (and vice versa) - has underpinned the creation and evolution of the European space assets and capabilities upon which the new future will be built! But science excellence can be fragile - it needs to be nurtured, not taken for granted. Hence the commitment of the ESF European Space Sciences Committee to work hard over the next two years - with ESA and the Delgations - to seek to ensure a necessary uplift in science funding of the mandatory programme, and within the optional Earth Observation and Exploration programmes at CM25. Europe is at the forefront of space science. It’s an inspiration to young people and the public and of justifiable European pride. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of knowledge. It has paid off before and will do again! Read the ESSC report submitted at Seville which makes the case …

ECSAT - The Next Ten Years Hot news. Following the series of stakeholder workshops held at the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in the autumn of 2023, and the resulting analysis of the current status of ECSAT, the ESA DG has asked me to lead the multi-directorate, multi-organisation delivery of ECSAT - the Next Ten Years. Our three-part vision is to: 1) Reinforce ECSAT's leadership of ESA's commercial space applications and telecommunications work as well all the other existing activities at the Harwell centre, notably including ESA's Climate Office. 2) Build on these by expanding into carefully selected new areas relevant to Europe's growing space ambitions. 3) More fully exploit ECSAT's interactions with the dozens of space, science and technology organisations on the Harwell campus and across the wider UK community, including key universities. In doing all this, we want to exploit ECSAT's hidden 'special power'. Unlike the other smaller ESA sites, within ECSAT's four walls there are already experts from six of ESA's ten directorates - and this may further expand in the future. This makes ECSAT a natural home for generating new ideas and tackling multi-disciplinary challenges that can't be pigeon-holed into existing programme structures. I'm looking forward to supporting the ECSAT team and working with you as we prepare ECSAT's second decade !

Feature - Building a promising future for the space sector in the North East “The conference clearly showed the significant progress and collaborative efforts within the UK space industry. The North East is playing an essential role in this development.” Last month more than 200 people from across the globe, including international experts, academics and those at the forefront of driving the space agenda, gathered for the North East Space Conference, the tenth year it has been held in the region. The conference, which was sponsored by Lockheed Martin, The North East Technology Park - NETPark, Newcastle University, Northumbria University and Orbex, discussed a wide range of issues, including the changing opportunities for the sector in the North East, the work being done on creating an ecosystem for outer space, what the growth of the space industry means to local universities, as well as outlining changing business opportunities in the space industry. Lockheed Martin have also partnered with Northumbria University and the UK Space Agency to build the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre, a £50 million project that aims to create “a hub for space technology” and further unlock the potential of the North East space sector. A huge development as Northumbria University announces a new NESST facility in the heart of the city campus. The £50m space skills, research and development centre is set to transform the UK space industry thanks to investments from Lockheed Martin, the UK Space Agency and the university. Exciting to be working for an institution who will be helping to deliver this new national space asset. NESST will bring together industry and academia to collaborate on internationally significant space research and technological developments. The building, which is due to re-open in 2025, will feature world-class laboratory, testing, teaching, collaboration and office spaces, and is due to create 350 jobs - a massive boost for the region and placing Newcastle firmly on the space 'map'! We look to the horizon and all the posibilities....the sky is no longer the limit. #SpaceNU #TakeOnTomorrow #Space #Innovation #Technology #Tech #Engineering #Science #Physics #Research #NorthumbriaUni #NorthumbriaUniversity
