Could Clerkenwell Design Week be more dynamic if the organisers championed key themes to drive discourse? - It’s both #ClerkenwellDesignWeek and #ChelseaFlowerShow this week. The former is flooded with interiors experts, designers and specifiers and the latter has a broader audience, appealing as much to industry people as it does to the garden-loving, floristry-fanatics who join the crowds to soak up the atmosphere. It’s #Aperol in #Clerkenwell and #Champagne in #Chelsea. For the most part, those who visit one, are unaware of the other. For me, it presents a moment to reflect on the role that large scale events have in driving #creativity, #innovation and #conversation and the differences in the way with think about our #interior and #exterior environments. Creating interiors, especially commercial interiors, is a necessary step in crafting (#brand) #experience - something I’m all for, of course. #Fabric, #furnishings and #fittings are routinely ripped out, reshaped and replaced to suit another vision or way of living. Clerkenwell Design Week brims with newness, #craft #technology and #aesthetics - it’s a one-stop-shop for things better and more beautiful than before. Each year, Chelsea centres around a key theme as determined by the event organisers, #TheRoyalHorticulturalSociety; this year’s being #sustainability. Cement-free gardens, native wildflowers and water saving are all highlights of the 2024 display. The blood, sweat and tears, #carbonfootprint, #waste and #environmental costs of putting on these large-scale events are enormous. But if they can spark #conversation, encourage different ways of seeing, drive #innovation and build #platformsforchange - then that’s a good thing. - Clerkenwell Design Week has an expected 37,000 visitors, spread over 3 days and Chelsea Flower Show, 142,000 visitors over 4 days.

We started Studio Mae at the end of 2018 with the idea of creating intentional, beautiful and healthy spaces that felt whole-heartedly homely for our clients. We didn’t know where that would take us and we didn’t have a really clear vision at the time, but here we are! Fast forward to 2024, we're focusing on our business goals and strategies on how to get closer to our vision. This will be a year that will be about making a lot of difficult decisions and saying no to a lot of things, so that we can say yes to the right things. Since starting, we have always decided not to go forward with anything, unless we have the means to do so. This has forced every one of our decisions to be methodical and very intentional. We have never taken a loan, or had investors, everything you see so far, and what we have put out there has been our own blood, sweat, tears, research and investment. We are incredibly proud of ourselves for that. This year we are taking some big leaps and are excited to see the rewards come to life. Our team is tiny, but mighty and everyone who we have ever worked with has an influential and important role in making us who we are. When looking at each person in our team, we only have amazing things to say about each of them. Each person has a different story, a different background, and brings a unique perspective and talent to Studio Mae. We have really honed in on our goals, and are looking forward to continuing taking the steps to get there. We’ve signed some really exciting projects, and are working with some of the most incredible people…and we are just getting started! While working remotely, most of us confronted a startling truth: our spaces were cluttered with things we didn't truly need. This realization sparked a deliberate shift towards minimalism. Today, my life comfortably fits into three suitcases—which was a very liberating move, I’d say. In 2023, came the influence of Scandinavian Design, inspired ethos of simplicity and functionality, which made me rethink my approach to decor. I opted for quality over quantity, timeless over trendy, sourcing items from local artisans or trusted brands. These pieces have since then, seamlessly transitioned with me through three different homes, proving their value. Ultimately, it's perfectly fine to follow trends but make the distinction of which ones you would fall in love with and evolve with, rather than something that’s pretty to look at for a few weeks that you would inevitably grow out of. The essence lies in choosing timelessness over fleeting fads. This change of intentional living has been influenced by Scandinavian Design principles.
