CONSERVATION NEWS — The EU has approved the 'Nature Restoration Law', a pioneering regulation aimed at restoring at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. It is the first comprehensive, continent-wide law of its kind with binding targets and obligations for member states to restore their natural habitats, with particular focus on those with the highest potential for carbon-capture such as wetlands, rivers and marine ecosystems. Big win for Europe today – the EU Council has approved the Nature Restoration Law (#NRL)! Huge thanks to everyone for tipping the scales and helping us hit that qualified majority. It was a close call with 66% in favor (we needed 65%). This is a massive step forward for our environment. Sure, there were some compromises to get everyone on board, but now we have solid goals for restoring our natural spaces. This proves that the EU Green Deal is still kicking and pushing us toward a sustainable future. Good to see this is now a minimum legal requirement, also for The Netherlands. This is the result of too many preceding polarized debates on a topic that is key to our survival. Although this may seem ambitious, it might be too little too late. Consider this simple, but realistic calculation to put the EU 2030 ambition of 3 Bln trees planted in perspective: Each day, the world emits about 100 million metric tons of CO2 from fossil fuels (100mln barrels a day). A mature tree absorbs approximately 22 kg of CO2 annually, which equates to about 0.06 kg of CO2 per day. To offset the daily emissions, we would need to plant and maintain 1.67 trillion trees because each tree sequesters a very small amount of CO2. Currently, we plant 5 to 10 million trees daily, a fraction of what’s needed. Additionally, we lose around 41 million trees daily due to deforestation, making it even harder to reach a balance in carbon sequestration. Great news yesterday with the EU Restoration law being voted in favour with €100 billion to restore nature by 2050 being agreed. Restoration targets include: ·     Restoration of peatlands, forests and marine habitats ·     No net loss of urban green spaces by 2030 and 10% tree cover in cities by 2050 ·     Reversing decline of pollinators by 2030 ·     Restoration of soils, grassland, butterflies and farmland birds Well done to #RestoreNature coalition and for Austria in changing its mind to saying yes to the European Council. The European Parliament's Environment Committee just voted in support of the Nature Restoration Law! This is an important step to ensure that Europe becomes the first continent in the world with a law that puts nature at the core of the green transition.
