During the Advanced Weapons Technology Summit in Huntsville, Al., NAC Vice President of Strategic Engagement and Brig. Gen. (ret) Al Abramson spoke with Mr. Ashley Johnson, Technical Director, Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division about regaining the warfighter capability gap over our adversaries and the importance of collaboration with industry to those efforts. “We need to outpace our adversaries… The fact of the matter is that many adversaries have caught us with regard to their capabilities… so the way for us to improve our comparative advantages is to outpace them. It’s a simple idea, but we all have to own that and truly collaborate in order to generate advantage for our warfighters.” Listen to the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/gDu22S4X

Today, April 26th is World Intellectual property Day. IP are creative products of innovation such as inventions, designs, and symbols, names and images used in commerce. The US government (and foreign governments) protect innovations using patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets. Protecting Navy intellectual property is important as companies need to be able to develop and market Navy Technologies, so they are developed and be ready to transition to the warfighter. So Kudos to the DoD, NAVSEA Warfare Centers (NSWC/NUWC) and Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) in getting innovations out to the nation’s defense. https://lnkd.in/eaJJv2vz

🎙In the latest Talking Strategy episode, we speak with Dr Afshon Ostovar, Associate Professor of National Security Affairs at the US Naval Postgraduate School, about Qasim Soleimani, arguably Iran’s most important military leader in modern history. He moved Iran’s overall strategy from a direct approach to an indirect one of proxy warfare using non-state actors. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3URPNbV

This is a recreation of a conceptual illustration I made in my paper on the Littoral Combat Ship at the Naval War College in 2002. Since 1980, every warship had become an aircraft carrier - the difference was how big and expensive the ship would be and how many and what type of aircraft it would carry. I argued that at a minimum, LCS had to be able to embark an SH-60. Using something other than a monohull, I suggested this would be possible on a ship 1,000 tons smaller than a Perry-class frigate: 3,000 tons.

Leading change is more than walking a robot dog down a hallway. It’s setting an example for others to follow. It’s picking something you yourself are going to start doing differently in the next five minutes. It’s defining success with specific and measurable outcomes and working with your peers and those in your charge to make those outcomes a reality. It’s recognizing that change isn’t always popular, and committing to help others change even if you don’t personally benefit from it. In short, it’s leadership. We succeed with it, or fail without it.
Huge props for the #IntelligentAutonomousSystem team at U.S. Naval Research Laboratory for supporting the demonstration of #Byght to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV), ADM Lisa Franchetti and her OpNav staff. She wanted to drive home the point that the US Navy has to get better at transitioning and deploying cutting edge #technology to the Fleet at the speed of relevance. We no longer have the luxury of moving at the speed we choose—we are competing with adversaries and will often have to move at a speed dictated by them. This may make some uncomfortable, as it will be a change for how we have done business over the past 30 years. It will force us to reevaluate our processes, systems, and planning cycles. For 30 years, the pacing threat has been the ORM risk matrix and the PPBE budgeting cycle. That is no longer the case and the sooner we make the change, the better. Also, it was super cool to walk down the halls of the Pentagon with a #droid tagging along. This sight will get much more common very soon.

5moTalk & meetings .... What does this do for the "little" people on the bottom of the "ladder" who are called to invent, create, demonstrate, develop, and then produce new "break-through" hardware, training, and use ??? Talk ... PowerPoints ... more talk ! ... so, so much over the past few decades. The "ladder: and "food chain" ... look longer than ever (with the rewards at the top).
