The crisis facing our criminal justice system has received extensive media coverage and is one of the most urgent issues for our new government. These challenges stem from decades of mismanagement and short-sighted policies by multiple administrations eager to appear ‘tough on crime’. However, every crisis presents an opportunity. With a long-term, evidence-based approach, we can redesign our justice system to be more effective, economical, equitable, and transparent; reducing reoffending and increasing public confidence. The Voluntary Sector offers the creativity, experience, and evidence to provide local, person-centred solutions. We welcome this chance to change how we view and deliver criminal justice and look forward to collaborating with our statutory and VCSE partners. ⚠️ Trigger Warning: This post mentions suicide ⚠️ This year, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Show saw the launch of the 2023 #NotInMyName campaign, where the agricultural community heard powerful and moving contributions from panellists highlighting the need for everyone to play their part in helping to end domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women. The WI (National Federation of Women's Institutes) Not in my Name Campaign aims to raise awareness about violence against women and recruit male ambassadors to make the White Ribbon promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will experience an abusive relationship in their lifetimes. We also know that the majority of farms in Wales are family farms, where their home is also a workplace and if that home is not safe, there is little escape. For those seeking to flee an abusive relationship, this can also mean losing a livelihood as well as a home.  Research suggests that women who suffer domestic abuse are three times more likely to take their own lives. This same research also highlights that perpetrators of domestic abuse are at an increased risk and that children exposed to domestic violence are at an increased risk of later taking their own life.  Living rurally can be a barrier to accessing help due to the urban location of most refuges.
