Are we sure that this year's FAFSA faceplant is really the primary reason we are seeing distrust in the public financial aid system bubbling up all across the country? Or maybe it's just exposing a distrust that has been bubbling up for a while now? The conventional wisdom telling consumers to, FIRST, apply to colleges for admission, and SECOND, apply for financial aid to pay for college, plunges many into a black hole of debt, despair, and - even if they enroll in college somewhere - ultimately drop out due because the amount they are being asked to pay is far more than the amount they have to pay. "With an accreditor’s stamp of approval, colleges get access to a pot of more than $106 billion in annual federal Title IV funding—federal loans, grants, and campus-based aid. Clearly, accreditors are not delivering on their charge as they continue to approve institutions with abysmal outcomes where students and taxpayers will see little or no return on investment. It begs the question—when will the watchdogs bite?" We should also ask when other states will follow Texas in stepping up to a challenge that accreditors have ignored.
