International Nurses Day 2024 theme announced! Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care   Geneva, Switzerland, 16 January 2024 ─ The economic power of care which creates healthy people and societies and drives healthy economies, will be highlighted by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) on International Nurses’ Day (IND) 2024 under the theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care.   International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated on 12 May each year and a theme is chosen by ICN – a federation of more than 130 national nursing associations around the world, representing the over 28 million nurses working worldwide.   ICN President, Dr Pamela Cipriano explained the reasoning behind the chosen theme:   “Despite being the backbone of health care, nursing often faces financial constraints and societal undervaluation. Continuing our overarching theme Our Nurses. Our Future. and the policy actions of the ICN Charter for Change, ICN has chosen to focus IND 2024 on the economic power of care with the aim to reshape perceptions and demonstrate how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits.     We believe now is the time for a shift in perspective. We have seen time and again how financial crises often lead to budgetary restrictions in health care, typically at the expense of nursing services. This reductionist approach overlooks the substantial and often underemphasized economic value that nursing contributes to health care and society as a whole.   Policymakers, health care administrators, and even the general public are often unaware or misinformed about the return on investment that adequate funding in nursing can provide, especially in financially turbulent times such as these. Drawing from the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and recognizing the increasing threat to the health of populations around the world due to conflicts, the climate crisis and financial instability, we believe the time is right to advocate for a shift in perspective and policy.”   A special IND report on the economic power of care will be released on 12 May 2024. Gillian Holtz, a Nurse Specialist in Wound Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Wound (CNS) at CMH, is delivering the second of six wound and ostomy* lessons to clinical staff huddles to improve their skills during ostomy care management for patients. This series uses a simulated patient ("Pat"), who has two ostomies, to demonstrate an ostomy pouch change, review tips and tricks for management, and answer any staff's questions. Let's talk about this! We have decades of work describing and measuring the contribution of nurses in the hospital setting. The industry has agreed upon major nursing sensitive indicators: HAPI, CAUTI, CLABSI, VAE, Falls with Injury. These measurements are intended to quantify the nurse's influence on quality care. What is your organization measuring in ambulatory care to describe and quantify the nurse's influence on quality care? Have you talked to your nurses about whether they feel like they have a direct influence on that metric? Are they using those metrics to drive their improvement projects? Do they even know this is the way their performance is being measured? We have work to do. What is the ambulatory care equivalent to CAUTIs and CLABSIs??? I now work in pediatric specialties: it's not screening for breast or colon CA; it's not HTN screening and follow up. Breaking the Mold: Nurses as Professionals, Not Just 'Angels in Uniform' On Monday, I asked, do we need to break the mold of nurses being seen as “little angels” rather than HIGHLY skilled, essential team members? The results back to me this week through interviews are a resounding YES we do. The answers below are the possible solutions; however, the big one for me is getting nurses to work together to recognise their value and to get their voices heard. We are seeing this trickle down effect at the bedside. I think the solution will be redesigning the onboarding process and transition from school to the workforce. #nursing cohorts and new grad programs are great but novice nurses need to be supported as well. My niche is workplace violence training and coaching but I would say the majority of my training sessions end up with giving so much practical nursing advice. We cover how to organize your day and how to set yourself up for success. If hospitals invest in nurse designed programs like mine, for whatever issue they are trying to solve, the faster and more cost effective the ROI will be. For instance there is Susan B. Davis DNP, MSN, RN for Code Readiness and people dedicated to better ICU care.
