New publication from Alissa Davis: "Effects of the Communities that Heal (CTH) intervention on perceived opioid-related community stigma in the HEALing Communities Study: results of a multi-site, community-level, cluster-randomized trial," published on March 12 in The Lancet Regional Health - Americas. Davis, the first author of the paper, said: "Our findings suggest that the CTH intervention was effective in decreasing perceived community stigma toward people treated for opioid use disorder (OUD) in 66 rural and urban communities across four diverse states. Implementing the CTH intervention in other communities impacted by the opioid epidemic may help decrease stigma toward people treated for OUD in different settings across the US and potentially globally.” Read the full publication: https://bit.ly/3VgcAhL

Research from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences found that opioid overdoses are killing a growing number of people who experience homelessness. The study found that approximately 1 in 6 people who died from opioid overdoses in 2021 were homeless compared to 1 in 14 in 2017. Several intersecting factors contribute to this troubling trend. One which is highlighted is the increasing toxicity of the drug supply over the last few years has led to more overdose deaths, according to Dr. Stephen Hwang, a physician-researcher at the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at Unity Health Toronto. People are dying every day from preventable overdoses and we need to support policies and tools that can help mitigate this worrying trend. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be a challenging diagnosis to navigate, and for many, the journey to getting diagnosed can be even harder. This #WorldMSDay, we're raising awareness about the barriers that prevent people from accessing timely and accurate MS diagnoses. Here are some common roadblocks: 👉 Lack of Awareness: MS symptoms can be varied, and sometimes mistaken for other conditions. Increased public awareness can lead to earlier diagnosis. 👉 Limited Access to Specialists: Neurologists who specialize in MS may not be readily available in all regions, causing delays in diagnosis. 👉 Diagnostic Challenges: No single test can definitively diagnose MS, and the process can involve multiple tests and consultations. What can you do? 👉 Educate Yourself: Learn about the signs and symptoms of MS and be your own health advocate. 👉 Spread Awareness: Talk to friends, family, and healthcare providers about MS and the importance of early diagnosis. 👉 Support Advocacy Efforts: Organizations like the MS International Federation are working to break down barriers to diagnosis. Together, we can create a world where everyone with MS has the opportunity for an early and accurate diagnosis.

I’m excited to share findings from a new study from CA Bridge, a program here at the Public Health Institute, which highlights the significant role that emergency departments can play in providing substance use treatment and reducing overdose deaths. People with opioid use disorder (OUD) were offered their first dose of buprenorphine treatment right in the emergency department—and 86% of them accepted. Those who received their first dose of buprenorphine in the ED were twice as likely to remain engaged in OUD treatment 30 days post-discharge compared to those who did not receive direct treatment, a jump from 23% to 50%. 291 hospitals are implementing this CA Bridge model intervention. In the midst of an ongoing opioid crisis, with only 10% of patients with opioid use disorder currently receiving treatment, these findings from CA Bridge help point the way forward for ongoing large-scale interventions that remove barriers to treatment, reduce stigma, and support people to get the care they need. Sponsors, CROs, sites, and anyone involved in running clinical trials must consider the risk of suicidality. But deep-rooted misconceptions get in the way. Each year, 703,000 people die by suicide, and this rate continues to rise. Site staff and principal investigators need the ability to assess suicidality risk across all trials. Our recent blog, "Myth vs. Reality: Understanding Suicidality Risk in All Clinical Trials" dispels three common myths to empower you to identify suicidality early, enhance participant well-being, and support clinical trial success. World Hemophilia Day is an annual observance on April 17 to raise awareness around hemophilia, a rare bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. The disease more common in men occurs due to alterations in genes that regulate our body to stop bleeding. The day is dedicated to supporting the global bleeding disorders community and advocating access to care, and treatment for all living with such disorders irrespective of age, gender, or location. There is no cure for the bleeding disorder currently and it's important to take measures for its management.
