Today I finally had time to watch Amy Webb’s presentation at #SXSW. I find the work she does with the Future Today Institute very interesting. In particular, their yearly Tech Trends report has helped me understand the technological change we are experiencing and the urgency to get involved. This year, the report discusses the technology super cycle and its potential impact on society, as well as the concentration of power among a small group of people who control tech resources. Avarice can make people do crazy things and some of the potential scenarios that Amy discussed during her talk are really messed up: - The possibility of AI being used to create a deep fake event that could trigger a real reaction and escalate into a regional conflict or even a world war. - The possibility of dynamic pricing approaches in grocery stores where the rich can have total freedom of movement, while those who are financially struggling have to stand and stare at the shelves watching digital attention coupons, waiting to afford the groceries they need to buy. - The possibility of malware getting tied to our physical movement while using special computing devices, where hackers could crack your movement identity and unlock malware. -The possibility of biocomputers being grown from human cells, raising ethical questions about the source of the cells and the treatment of the biocomputers. All this stuff sounds like SciFi but it is possible today. Not in 5 or 10 years. Today. That’s why it’s important to educate everyone about the implications of rapidly advancing technologies and the critical role of ethics and accountability in their use. As individuals, we have a responsibility to not only understand these technologies but also to engage actively in shaping the policies that govern them. The future shaped by technology should reflect our collective values and aspirations. It’s crucial that we all take part in ensuring that advancements benefit society as a whole, prevent the concentration of power, and safeguard against unethical uses. Finally, I want to highlight something important from Mustafa Suleyman’s book “The Coming Wave”: “Credible critics must be practitioners. Building the right technology, having the practical means to change its course, not just observing and commenting, but actively showing the way, making the change, effecting the necessary actions at source, means critics need to be involved. They cannot stand shouting from the sidelines. This is in no way an argument against critics, quite the opposite. It’s a recognition that technology deeply needs critics—at every level but especially on the front lines, building and making, grappling with the tangible everyday reality of creation. If you’re reading this and are critical, then there’s a clear response: get involved.” If you are one of those critics, play your role.

"My" vs. "Our" In the early stages of a relationship, the division between "my" and "our" is a nuanced challenge. As technology becomes an integral part of our daily lives, so do the files, folders, and accounts that accompany it. The transition from individual to shared digital spaces is a journey that demands communication, understanding, and compromise. Communication Breakdown: The Wife's Perspective For the wife, the frustration stems not just from a technical issue but from a deeper emotional context. The phrase "my documents" inadvertently communicates a sense of separation, a subtle suggestion that their digital lives are not intertwined. It prompts her to question the nature of their digital partnership and whether they are truly sharing their lives in both the physical and virtual realms. Building a Digital Connection: Navigating the Challenges To address this challenge, couples must engage in open and honest communication about their digital habits and expectations. Establishing shared spaces, whether it be in cloud storage, shared calendars, or joint social media accounts, can help bridge the gap between individual and collective digital experiences. Embracing the "Our" in Technology The key to overcoming the challenges of technology in relationships lies in adopting an inclusive mindset. Instead of "my documents," strive for "our documents." This small linguistic shift reflects a broader commitment to shared responsibilities, shared memories, and a shared digital future. In conclusion, as we navigate the intricate dance between technology and relationships, let us be mindful of the subtle language we use and the digital spaces we create.
