"Brown v. Board of Education: 70 Years On, Where Do We Stand?" 📜 70 years ago, the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case forever changed the landscape of education in America. Today, as we reflect on its legacy, it's evident that our journey towards equity is far from over. Checkout Ronald Mitchell's insightful article: 1️⃣ Separate is Not Equal: Brown v. Board highlighted the injustices of segregated education, paving the way for a more inclusive system. But challenges persist, especially in ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students. 2️⃣ The Battle for Affirmative Action: Recent Supreme Court decisions have dealt blows to affirmative action, threatening diversity, and opportunities in higher education. It's crucial to defend policies that promote inclusivity and level the playing field. 3️⃣ Upholding the Promise of Brown v. Board: As we honor this milestone, let's recommit to dismantling systemic biases and strengthening educational opportunities for every child. Our collective action today will shape a more just and equitable future for generations to come. 🎓 #BrownvBoard #CivilRights #EducationalEquity 🌟 Let's take action together to ensure that the promise of Brown v. Board of Education remains alive and thriving! One thing I haven’t done well (as principal) is influencing staff to focus on their individual impact. What I mean is - what effect size impact are they (teachers) having on their grades. How do we get staff to embrace this? What can I do to have staff excited about how much gain, their students are making? We’ve had a quantifiable measure since Hattie’s seminal work (2007) and a formula (an effect size) to measure this. What are the barriers to schools delivering on this? At yesterday’s Victorian Principal’s Conference, there was a lot of focus on what works (little has changed in what we have known for 20 years). I think the question should be - what are we doing to measure (and celebrate) what we already know works?

Higher Ed Partner | Finance Thought Leader | Former CFO Creating the sustainable business models higher ed needs
Great to see rpk's latest Issue Brief out in the world! This issue focuses on #strategicpartnerships. How to think beyond just mergers. And how to incorporate strategic partnership into the creation of a more sustainable business model.
Traditionally, higher education institutions operated under the assumption that they must provide all programs and services themselves, restricting the exploration of strategic partnership opportunities—a practice widely adopted in other sectors. In our latest Issue Brief, Rick Staisloff, Senior Partner at rpk GROUP, sheds light on strategic partnerships, guiding readers through: 1. Understanding the current landscape of strategic partnerships. 2. Navigating the partner selection process. 3. Recognizing common challenges faced during strategic partnerships. And, as expected, it was excellent! Drs. Jamila A. Cupid, Rockell A. Brown, Kandace Harris, and Sakile K. Camara discussed research and practice on diversity, equality, inclusion, justice, access, and belonging from the course level to the institution level, connecting with workforce issues and more. They finished with a pathway to action. Institutions that want to sustainably serve students and improve the quality of education, their own management, and retain students will do well to assess what they are doing for ALL members of their community: students, faculty, and staff. I came away with resources to take back to my own institution to work with colleagues on figuring out whether what we are doing does in fact make the difference we think it is. (I draw on Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know?" as my own motivator....we think we are doing X, Y, and Z, but how do we know? We need to reflect on our actions.) What processes, procedures, policies, and practices do we have to support innovations and action that makes a difference? Looking forward to our spring Assessment Day with some ideas in mind now... #NCA2023 #NCA23 #DEIJ #DEIBA
Who will be at the “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and the Promise of ‘Justice’?: Examining Policy, Practice, and Pathways of Action for Communication Scholars and Administrators” pre-conference session of the National Communication Association Annual Convention? It's going to be a great session. “Every educator practitioner should understand what DEI/J means, how it works, and why it is essential in higher education. DEI/J readiness and commitment can be measured by the extent to which a university, college, unit, or organization exemplifies and champions the 'Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice framework. This pre conference provides an examination of current university DEI/J initiatives and issues, assessment resources, and the possibility of sustainability in the 21st Century Higher Ed landscape. Panelists' lens include university administrators, DEI/J officers and communication scholars.”

Lol, I guess I've been a prolific poster today. I have a bit of a cold and am just laying back. Anyways, as I've continue to reflect and (agitate), I want to propose that a community organization be more concerned with the question, "how does an idea or proposal serve the community's needs" as the primary question, with the benefit to the organization being the secondary question. I feel like the ethics of a community organization would dictate that service to the community is the main concern. This is not a proposal that ignores the needs of the organization, but one that puts the community needs first, while paying attention to the important needs of the organization to continue delivering its services. In this respect community advisory boards that express the needs of the community to an organization become more important and develop more of a voice in shaping the work of the organization and the types of services it provides.

On November 15th, Professor Allyson Holbrook presented at IPCE’s Civic Engagement Lunch Talk series at the UIC Daley Library with "Public Opinion Surveys: Attitudes, Knowledge, Perceptions, and Beliefs". Dr. Holbrook and her team's research involved three studies to examine attitudes, knowledge, perceptions, and beliefs associated with public opinion surveys among adults. The studies included focus groups of Chicago residents to explore how they thought about public opinion surveys and their role in democracy. The second survey was a pilot test of measures to assess attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge about public opinion surveys. Finally, the third study involved measurement of attitudes, knowledge, and perceptions about public opinion surveys and included vignette experiments to assess how the characteristics of a survey affect perceptions of it.
