Calling all educators! Join us this Thursday, July 11, for our special virtual workshop for educators: Women’s History Documented: Building Curriculum using Primary Sources. Learn about developing women’s history curriculum for K-12 students in a variety of subject matters using strategies such as Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) and historical empathy. This session is free but advanced registration is required. Those who attend will receive a certificate of completion. "The 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is just two years away. America250 is the official entity charged by Congress with planning celebrations and recently announced its inaugural National Resource Partners — a select group of nonprofit organization that will help elevate and scale America250 programing. One of the partners is the National Women's History Museum (NWHM). In a recent statement from NWHM president and CEO Frédérique Campagne Irwin, she says, "Women have been largely excluded from the narrative of America’s historical contributions and achievements. As a National Resource Partner, we'll support the strategic vision that the America250 Commission has laid out to ensure that women's stories and history are incorporated in this commemoration." We hope this publication gives you a sense of the magnitude of the work that we did last year, and the depth of support that we received from supporters like you that made it all possible. Moving forward, we plan to institute this publication in April of each year to articulate not only the impact we have as an organization, but also the progress we are making towards our new strategic plan and mission. June 22 marked 52 years since the passage of Title IX, an amendment that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs that receive federal funding. The National Women's History Museum was in New York City yesterday for a special evening in support of our organization. Graciously hosted by NWHM's NY Chair Cheri Kaufman and Kelly Stuart Graham, the evening kicked off with remarks from NWHM President and CEO Frédérique Campagne Irwin, who shared how the Museum's nearly 30 years of bringing women's stories and history across the U.S. is helping to close the gender parity gap. The evening also included powerful, moving performances by cast members from Suffs, the epic and timely Tony award-winning Broadway musical about the women's suffrage movement. Cast member Nikki M. James performed “Wait My Turn,” and Chessa Metz performed “Lucy’s Song.” Following the performance was an inspiring conversation, moderated by Cheri Kaufman, with actress, producer, and New York Times bestselling author Demi Moore. Demi spoke about the importance of young women and girls knowing the possibilities of what they can achieve. Congratulations to the winners of the 2024 National History Day Women’s History Prizes! This year’s theme was “Turning Points in History.” Avani Durvasula and Farah Hawks, students at Eastern Middle School, won first place in the Junior Exhibit category for their project chronicling segregation in the women’s suffrage movement. In the Senior Exhibit category, Iowa high school student and track star Anessa Morrison focused her award-winning project on Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run in the Boston Marathon. Her display, “Running Towards Gender Equality,” was featured in the National Museum of American History alongside other prize winners. The National History Day Women's History Prizes are sponsored by the National Women's History Museum thanks to the generosity of one of our long-time charter members.
