Alex C and I come from similar worlds apart—the post-Soviet terrains of Russia and the now war-torn Donetsk region of Ukraine. Our childhoods were overshadowed by the pangs of food scarcity, a memory that now fuels our purpose at Zina's. I remember the lengths to which my parents went to provide for me amid widespread need. Their resilience inspired my vow when I joined Zina's over ten years ago, and ever since, we have chosen to annually contribute to the cause of helping end food insecurity. We have kept that promise, contributing annually. Now, as 2024 approaches, we're ready to broaden our impact and invite organizations aligned with our vision to join us. Let them eat Cereal? For some of us, some of the time, this AI generated supper may look inviting but there is more to chew on here than a bowl of carbs. In all fairness to Kellogg Company and its CEO, we should acknowledge the fact that Kellogg does a lot to help fight hunger with food donations and employee volunteer efforts. But is that enough? What if every business that benefits from sales in communities in and around food insecure areas really chose to sponsor change? It wouldn’t take a huge amount of effort to support a local pantry or soup kitchen. Why not help our dedicated nonprofit organizations directly, eliminating the middle men? Much of the greatest impact is being provided by the smallest local community groups. That’s why we have revamped our operations to help underfunded and unfunded nonprofits get food to those who need it most. You can join us at Meals on Main Street in this effort by sponsoring our mobile pantry trucks and our mobile food hubs. Let’s have a real conversation about sponsorships for the organizations that are putting more on the table than cereal.

Rising food costs have made it challenging for people to feed themselves and as a result has stretched many charitable food organizations thin. PACK Savannah is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides weekend food packs to over 4,600 food-insecure children in Savannah and the surrounding areas. They also have two smaller programs that support foster children and children in crisis. How do we start?" That was Monday, 2/5, and we have been busy since. PACK's biggest challenge has been sharp increases in food costs. Because her food pack is unique compared to what many food pantries typically provide to families, only about 10% of PACK's total food can be sourced from the local food bank. She's recently experienced high triple-digit cost increases in several food categories, so I have been arranging alternative suppliers to help reduce costs in line with previous levels. Today, we placed our first order for six pallets of juice boxes. This would have cost PACK $9,000 recently, but we were able to place this order for $5,040 shipped. We also identified a supplier for individual snacks (e.g., cookies, nutritional bars) at more than 50% estimated savings and no more precious time wasted making trips to local Sam's. These savings will go a long way toward stabilizing the organization's financial health. Unfortunately, PACK is critically under-capitalized at the moment due to recent price hikes, and it would take 2-3 months before our current cost-cutting efforts and fundraising initiatives get us on solid footing again. Please consider donating to PACK to allow us to continue our operations without interruption. $200 feeds a child for 52 weekends, but any amount of support would be greatly appreciated. On Giving Tuesday, our community truly delivered: - Over $25,000 in donations on a single day! - 48 Giving Ambassadors used their personal platforms to share the movement with their communities - Countless others sharing about a community determined to fight food insecurity. With an inclusive spirit of unity for the greater good. To all, a wholehearted thank you! Giving Tuesday donations have propelled our community well on the way to the goal of raising $100,000, to fight food insecurity and bring the pantry to more people than ever in 2024. That means: - More excess produce rescued–With our new 24-foot truck, we're saving more produce every week - More people served–In the last two months, we’ve gone from serving 1,100 households per week to more than 2,500…and counting! - More people to power the movement–We’ve hired a full-time driver, who’s making daily deliveries into the heart of the community. In 2024, we’ll add to our staff, to increase our capacity even more! None of this would happen without you–a community of neighbors helping neighbors.
