An important new study from the American Historical Association that sheds light on what is actually going on in American history classrooms around the United States. The short version: “The typical American history classroom is neither awash in white supremacy nor awoke with critical race theory.” This should be a common-sense finding. To flip the statement around, media reports tend to focus on outliers: the extreme, the outrageous, the outlandish. In most cases, K-12 teachers are doing their absolute best to design and implement curriculum that comes from state education departments. We have lots of work to do to improve history education. Though overemphasized, the attacks are real and can have an impact. More than anything else, though, right now we’re fighting a battle about whether history and historical expertise matters at all. Glad to see the AHA in the trenches.
Media accounts of a politically charged war for the soul of social studies are overblown... The typical American history classroom is neither awash in white supremacy nor awoke with critical race theory. If "History Wars" is a problelm, it's in the state house, not the school house. https://lnkd.in/e_AzX2qH

In 2023, NORC conducted the Survey of U.S. History Teachers for the American Historical Association to examine what 6th to 12th graders are being taught in U.S. history classes. Learn how the survey findings helped the AHA understand whether and how the culture wars show up in classrooms across the country in this Time magazine article. https://lnkd.in/eDsPuh48

"Politically motivated activists may be waging a history war, but teachers are not its warriors." My colleagues on the American Historical Association's Mapping the Landscape of Secondary US History Education research team and Jim Grossman published an excellent essay in Time magazine summarizing some of the key findings from two years of research. There are lots of steps we can take to improve student learning in secondary history and social studies -- investing more resources and class time in these disciplines, or improving access to high quality professional development. But accusing teachers of imposing political views in the classroom distracts from the very real issues and challenges facing our public education system. Check out the essay in Time, tune in this afternoon for an AHA Learn webinar with the mapping team, and stay tuned for more insights in the full report due out later this year. This is an excellent piece previewing new research from the American Historical Association about what is, and is not, taught in America's social studies classrooms. ◾ It does a really good job articulating the limitations sweeping declarations and even state curriculum standards have on individual classrooms and assignments. ◾ They reveal how many teachers are now grabbing classroom resources from the web, as opposed to leaning on regular textbook readings. ◾ Teachers take seriously their role in presenting multiple sides to issues and maintaining a politically neutral stance, part of their broader effort to help students develop critical thinking skills and learn what it means to be an informed citizen in a 21st-century democracy. The big takeaway: "The typical American history classroom is neither awash in white supremacy nor awoke with critical race theory." https://lnkd.in/eCN8JDuV

💡"Imagination itself...is essential to effective social justice work." --Phillip Brian Harper, program director for Higher Learning at the Mellon Foundation. We couldn't agree more. We enjoyed reading about their new grants via Humanities for All, the objective of which is two fold: 1) Make undergraduate students aware of the concrete, practical skills they can develop through humanities study, and 2) Help students recognize that imagination itself, which is one of the primary foci of humanities inquiry, is essential to effective social justice work We appreciated seeing two historically Black Colleges and Universities, HBCUs, included in this number. This is great news ahead of #America250. #history is the soul of unity. And, this shows that politics doesn’t have to be in everything. Somethings can get along nicely without politics. #historyenterprise #America250SD

"In many instances, community college faculty are leading the way, with support from administrators and grant-making institutions: together they are helping students understand that their professional aspirations are not divorced from traditional subjects like history, philosophy, literature and composition. In fact, there is growing recognition that these subjects are more relevant than ever." #humanities #communitycollege #liberalarts #professionaldevelopment
