In part, it is a classic historian’s argument about uncertainty. Despite all the speculation about NATO’s collapse over the years, we tend to eschew thinking about what the Alliance’s disintegration might look like. Would it be a big bang triggered by a dramatic and sudden episode? Or would it come in dribs and drabs, barely perceived until it could no longer be ignored? The story I trace is one of halting, but steady erosion marked by waning confidence in the core principles and assumptions underpinning the alliance. NATO often performed well in public polls, even at the height of anti-nuclear campaigning in the early 1980s, but the components and capabilities that made it function – things like nuclear weapons, deterrence, and even the US presence in Europe – received far less support in those same polls. Could NATO be broadly popular yet still end up obsolete for all practical purposes, hollowed out by constraints imposed by voters’ preferences, budget sheets, and coalition politics?   But the other way the Euromissiles might have destroyed NATO was with a big bang. Any use of these nuclear weapons, something which was hardly out of the realm of the possible in the atomic age, would have unleashed untold destruction on the territory of NATO’s members – and much of the planet. IAFNS is member-focused and member-led. We actively seek to serve our members and our community. Our Annual Meeting is set to ensure that we are meeting your needs - by offering a hybrid event. Attending conferences can serve to advance knowledge, build community and be a source of new contacts and ideas. While the 9 to 5 of presentations and discussion is important, professionals also value the 5pm to 9pm of dinners with colleagues and friends afterwards. But the post-COVID era has challenged meeting planners as they face choices in how to balance in-person with online attendance, set fair prices for both, and grapple with the additional level of complexity of organizing for both in-person and remote attendance options. This often involves extensive audiovisual and computer technology, set ups and tear downs, and monitoring functions in real time to respond to access challenges. Engagement must include opportunities for both in-person and online attendees. The experience needs to work for both. As we plan our upcoming June 4-5, 2024, IAFNS Annual Summer Science Symposium we are mindful of your needs and are committed to offering both in-person and online options. While some extra planning is required, it seems the surest way to share and mobilize knowledge and provide networking opportunities for those in the food and beverage ecosystem.
