I don't often have much to say on here; LinkedIn isn't the greatest platform for Ag, but something I came across yesterday prompted me to write this: In an age where sustainability is key to saving the planet, most people I come across give none or very little thought to the sustainability of the food on their plate, or rather the sustainability behind the journey to get it there. There's not much of a culture of providing for oneself in the UK, or there wasn't when I left, 8 years ago. Here in the States, it is a little different, but I still come across many who get uptight & preach against processing their own meat for the table, but will quite happily go & grab a packet of chicken breast from the shelf at the store. For the first time yesterday, I came across someone from the UK who had processed & cooked a mean rooster she had. Something we do all the time here without a thought. I say without a thought, that is not strictly true; every creature that is used to put meat on our table is dispatched with a little prayer of thanks for the giving of it's life to nourish us. I could also mention the quality of life for the animals we provide for ourselves, but that is a discussion for another day. Below is what prompted this post. "If most people had to kill their food, most people would be vegetarians." I suppose that *sounds* right, but it's provably not true. The history of man is that we hunted for meat and killed it ourselves for 2 million years. This is what we did. It is written in the grooves on mammoth bones, spear points, and campfires the world over. It is why we domesticated chickens, sheep, goats, camels, horses, cows, ducks, geese, pigs, and pigeons. We raised our own meat and killed it too. It was sold alive in the market until 150 years ago, as there was no refrigeration. You wanted chicken for dinner? You killed it in the backyard. There is no trick or art in killing, and it is not shocking after you have done it and lived with it. This was the "daily normal" for almost all of human history. It is only the arrogance of modern lazy times when ripe fruit is delivered in winter, and sugar and nuts come in a bag, that we have embraced foreign foods such as potatoes and tofu, almonds, and pumpkins, papaya and pineapple. There is nothing wrong with vegetarianism, and quite a lot good, but eating meat is not immoral, and killing things is not shocking. Are the hawk and the fox immoral and unnatural? Is flying in grapes from Chile, almonds from California, and apples from Oregon morally superior to local eggs, chicken, and grass-raised beef? Is hand-harvested food picked by impoverished peasants in Mexico, Colombia, Kenya, and China morally superior to the machine-planted and harvested corn that feeds our cows and chickens? I don’t think so. If you feel otherwise, I’m more than OK with that, but I’ve come to see a lot of misery in a coffee cup and a lot of exploitation in a banana. Killing a chicken? It’s not shocking to me.

🌿 We Had To Do It 🌿 Let's just say we had to prune it for growth We had to make a tough decision on the farm. Firstly, how our beloved pawpaw tree started flourishing in its current location, I do not know. Bang along a walkway, we agreed to leave it alone and let it be. Then we realized that our beloved pawpaw tree had grown too many branches, and we knew it would either slow down fruiting or give us smaller fruits. Though it was painful, we had no choice but to remove some of the branches. Sometimes, growth requires letting go of what’s holding us back. Just like this tree, we must prune the excess in our lives to thrive and reach our full potential. Here’s to embracing change and making room for new and healthy growth. Don’t buy food from strangers Instead of a drone we’ve got a 24 year old van with holes in the floor, that chat bot is named Hannah, and she usually responds in between toddler meltdowns, and overnight shipping is just out of the question. We do not ever aspire to sell to supermarkets. We don’t in fact want to be able to respond instantly to every email or social media message. We don’t even want to acquire more land. We do admit that would like to work a little less so we can enjoy our farm and family. Plus we would like health insurance and a little savings at the end of the year. Mostly we want to make sure that we know all of our customers. We want to always offer flexibility, and if someone in our community needs help, we want to be available. We want the farm to be a place that helps others feel peaceful and calm. We have tried our best to create a model that supports both a healthy, sustainable farm and is convenient and accessible to our community. We are not interested in being everyone’s cup of tea or letting go of our principles to perpetuate the culture of urgency. We know that you all are here because you would rather know the people growing your food than get it fast and cheap, and we are endlessly grateful to have found our people. As the world moves towards a circular economy and re-engineers itself for long-term sustainability, one of the most exciting, and controversial areas of development is food tech. I stumbled on this article a few weeks ago about a company called Wild Earth, that produces both plant-based and cultivated meat pet food lines.   The Founder and CEO of Wild Earth, Ryan Bethencourt, launched the company after learning that 30% of the meat consumed in the U.S. goes towards feeding pets. Based on scientific research and application, Bethencourt found that pet animals could not just survive, but thrive on plant-based proteins. In 2019, Bethencourt appeared on national television to raise capital for Wild Earth, and became a contestant on the hit show Shark Tank. One of the sharks, Mark Cuban, invested $550,000 for 10% of the company. Since then, Wild Earth has raised nearly $50 million dollars in funding. In 2022, the company announced that it was also moving into cultivated meat, or meat created from the cells of animals, which is a slaughter-free process.   Now Wild Earth is offering both a plant-based pet food line, and a separate line of cultivated pet foods for people who want real meat, but don’t want to support the cruel practice of factory farmed animals. 🐣All The Steps🐣 . Every Monday we have a team huddle with all of us working together on the farm. We talk through weekly updates, what has shifted with the weather and how that changes the needs of the birds, the land and we create new processes. 🌱 Every single step it takes to create this ending photo of shipping our chicks at the post office are all completely different equally important. From proper management of the flocks, cleaning of coops, egg collecting, sorting/incubating, troubleshooting, customer servicing, hatching, sorting, brooding, packing, shipping it is a whole lot of moving parts. Our team is small, just four of us but we are mighty and joyful everyday. 💫 🌱 These chicks in these white cheerful boxes look so simple and there is a whole incredible story behind what it takes to make this stage happen. What an amazing intersection of science and satisfaction! A story that began with feeding cattle our innovative red seaweed product, Seagraze™, followed by by a sensory panel with unrivaled ambiance at TuskPDX to assess SeaGraze™-fed beef! 🥩 It was so impressive seeing the team from Oregon State University's Food Innovation Center organize and conduct the panel with the Portland participants. We are so grateful for the opportunity to explore product implementation of SeaGraze™ with beef cattle at Carman Ranch. Carman Ranch already operates under a sustainable and regenerative mindset while raising some of the most delicious beef there is. "Our ranching practices restore the soil, respect the animals, and create business opportunities in our rural communities, all while growing delicious, nutrient-dense food" - Carman Ranch It is imperative to us that we create a feed additive that can be successfully integrated across various livestock management systems, and much of that comes from trial and error. The lessons learned and successes of this project has shaped much of my first year here at Symbrosia . Thank you Carman Ranch for being an integral part of our journey!
