No one warns you about how difficult it is to start a non-profit; what have I got myself into? 😂 Launching The Freedom Food Alliance has been one of the most challenging things I have ever done. There are days when I oscillate wildly between mild panic and excitement. We are taking on a global media monster, animal agribusiness and an army of zealots that would sell their grandmother to keep meat, milk and eggs in the human diet. Despite the enormity of the adversary, I am motivated to use the power of media to push back against what has become a tsunami of misleading content. A deluge that distracts, derails and delays the necessary move towards a plant-based and animal-free food system. But here is where we are at: At month two, we have formal non-profit status, open bank accounts, an accountant in place, and a team of 7; we even have £200,000 of match funding, two websites being built, and two brands in development, each with their unique strategy. A significant disinformation report by esteemed researcher and data scientist Nicholas Carter has seen comprehensive spread coverage on DeSmog, Green Queen Media, Plant Based News, vegconomist - the vegan business magazine and coverage by critically acclaimed American molecular biologist and nutritionist Marion Nestle. But the cow in the room always comes back to funding. How on earth do we convince donors, and you, my community, to support our lofty plans to build a machine that will act as a powerful counterbalance to the ever-increasing mountains of news media, blogs and social media posts that mislead the public and push the consumer further and further away from alt-protein and future foods. We are a long way off our first-year budget, but I remain hopeful that we can move the needle with the proper support and a powerful team of media experts. Here is my secret but not-so-secret formula for success. Cutting Edge Science communication + digital marketing + behavioural science = success. This is what the advertising industry does; this is how they can convince consumers to keep animal products in their diets. They have been doing it successfully for decades. We know that from a very early age, this industry dupes the public with the idea that eating animals is normal, natural, necessary, and sometimes even 'nice'. This has got to change for the sake of our species and every other earthling on this planet. Foie gras production involves force-feeding ducks or geese through a tube inserted into their throats multiple times a day to fatten their livers to an abnormal size, causing the animals significant stress and pain. This process is widely criticized for its inhumane treatment of the birds, with most living their entire lives in dark factory farms. In a promising development, GOURMEY, a cultivated meat startup based in Paris that has raised over $50 million, recently submitted Europe’s first application for regulatory approval for cultivated meat, specifically its cultivated foie gras. If achieved at scale, Gourmey and other startups have the potential to displace traditional factory-farmed animals, providing ethical and sustainable solutions that benefit humans, animals, and the planet. The struggle to put nutritious meals on their tables is relentless, a grim testament to their limited resources and the absence of affordable, quality food options. This issue isn't just about physical health; it's a cruel weight that drags families into a mire of economic stress and unforgiving food insecurity. It's a problem we can't afford to ignore, one that affects not some distant few, but people just like you and me, grappling with the harsh choices between nourishment and empty pockets. The Solution: We have a transformative solution in mind - a Grow Bag Farm. These innovative farming systems empower communities to grow their own produce, regardless of space constraints. A brilliant example demonstrating that shifting towards a better food system creates new opportunities for people and economic growth. The animal-based food system is inherently unsustainable; it's only a matter of time before it collapses. #Sustainability is one of the most misused words in today's world, with most people not understanding its meaning. It's often used for virtue signaling or greenwashing. For something to be sustainable, it must meet three criteria simultaneously: it has to be environmentally friendly, economical, and socially acceptable. Animal products are inherently unsustainable. Even if we could hypothetically solve one problem with animal products, it only exacerbates other issues. If you try to treat animals better, they become less economical and worse for the environment. If you try to make it economical with factory farms, they become less socially acceptable. Other problems, such as zoonotic diseases and pandemics, are inherent to raising animals. Currently, there is a bird flu going around that, according to the CDC, originated from both factory and backyard farms. Another inherent problem is the low energy conversion rate, meaning most energy put into producing animal products is wasted. Remember, we already don't have enough food, and by 2050 we need to feed 10 billion people. Now, consider another fact: 77% of all agricultural land is dedicated to meat and dairy production (grazing + feed), while providing only 18% of the global calorie supply and 37% of the global protein supply. It doesn't take a scientist to realize we have a problem, and the current system based on animal products is not working. *** This dairy facility converted due to rising demand for plant-based substitutes, preserving jobs, boosting the economy, and freeing animals from dairy industry cruelty. All animals are killed the moment they are no longer profitable for businesses. There's hardly any industry as cruel as the dairy and egg industries. Changes like these are powerful indications that consumers are making better choices, and companies are responding to them! We need systemic changes, but we also need a change in the demand for animal products. I can't emphasize enough the importance of dedicating one's career to alternative proteins, including precision fermentation, plant-based products, and cultivated meat. Others can contribute through their work in policy, education, investment, and more. But ideally, to become better versions of ourselves and to have an even bigger impact, I think we should consider not contributing to the problems we aim to solve. We should live by example. We should be the change we want to see in the world. We should always improve and hold ourselves to higher standards, regardless of where we are. Attened an enlightening #SB1383 webinar hosted by Solana Center for Environmental Innovation today! 💚 Here are a few takeaways & where businesses can start 💚 1️⃣ SB 1383 impacts ALL California residents, businesses, education agencies, and non-local entities (special districts, state/federal facilities, and prisons).  2️⃣ The purpose is to reduce the amount of methane created by the decomposition of food waste and other organic materials. 🤯 Methane has 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years of its lifecycle.  3️⃣ Industries will need to ensure inedible food waste is diverted from landfills and sent to anaerobic digesters, compost facilities, or used as animal feed. They will need to instruct their staff and customers on proper waste separation.  4️⃣ Food recovery is required so that edible food can reach those in need, helping both the planet and food insecurity. 5️⃣ Where to start?? 🍻 🍔 Measure your organic waste - this can be as simple as going through the organic waste bin at the end of a shift and manually recording what and how much is there or use digital tracking tools. 🍕 Understand why it is there - is it inedible? Is it due to the way the produce is cut and processed? is it not part of the recipe? and/or affect the end product? 🍟 Can it be reused - Can it be used in another recipe or product? This can be a fun challenge for chefs and product creators! It can also be a good opportunity for partnerships with companies who can use your waste. One example was nut milk creating a lot of leftover pulp, so the pulp was repurposed into vegan cheese, adding more revenue and reducing waste. 🍳 Measure unsold or uneaten products - have front of staff note what is being left on the plate by customers or unsold product (that is safe for human consumption and can be redistributed). 🍿 Knowing what is being left by customers can help you strategize your back of house by removing unwanted items or making sides customizable. 🍭 Knowing what unsold product can be redistributed can help you connect with the right non-profit or partnership, measure your food donations for tax write-offs, and boost employee morale and customer support through publicizing your donation efforts. 🌯 There are legal protections for food donators from liability and there has never been a legal action against food donation. ( 🤡 also it is now illegal to purposefully spoil food so it can't be donated) 🥦 The authority enforcing SB1383 will depend on your industry.
