Cottonopolis: Lessons for environmental science through the lens of Manchester This AHRC/NERC-funded project explores the archives of ‘cotton’ to unsettle the celebration of Manchester’s history as a city of science and innovation The project also challenges us to rethink the history of environmental knowledge production at The University of Manchester and our role in Manchester’s colonial legacy, revealing our complicity in global socio-environmental legacies. Within its much celebrated ‘innovative past’ Manchester – and its industries, private businesses, universities, and cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, art galleries, and observatories – were key hubs in the expansion of the UK’s colonial aspirations. This project interrogates Manchester’s role as the first industrialising city, and the dominance of the expansion of global cotton markets through environmental science, which ultimately provided the cultural and scientific authority that underpinned colonial expansion, frontier agriculture, and colonial urbanization. In this project ‘cotton’ is a starting point from which to unsettle the celebration of Manchester’s history as a city of science and innovation, challenging us to rethink the history of the first industrial city as a global socio-environmental history with a problematic legacy for the environmental sciences. Through the histories of cotton, we reveal the socio-environmental legacies of industrial Manchester and the environmental knowledge and impacts this legacy created. #qbsmscbloggers

Well Done

Essential research in Anaerobic Digestion, a process that can destroy >90 percent of disease-causing bacteria (US-EPA). Not only does AD produce less sludge compared to aerobic waste processes, it harnesses the gas produced to form biogas (an annual potential production of circa 200 billions m3 (Appels et al., 2008). USW is leading the way with it research in biomethanation, biorefining, and of course process monitoring 😇. There is clearly a major policy imperative to ensure ALL organic waste is treated biologically, further reduce sludge volumes and recover essential products such as organic acids and solvents, natural polymers. The potential of biogas as a flexible despatchable, demand orientated, energy source appears to have made little or no impact in energy security strategy. To my colleagues in the policy world, this deserves immediate attention. Thanks to Adam Henley for sharing this.
