Between 2000 and 2020, the WHO reports a rise in the number of women using modern contraceptives, from 663 million to 851 million. However, the proportion of women using contraceptives is lower in the 18–30 age group compared to the 30–50 age group. Female contraceptive methods play a pivotal role in empowering women to take control of their reproductive health and make informed choices about family planning. Adressing teenage pregnancies. Adolescent pregnancy remains a major contributor to maternal and child mortality. Complications relating to pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for girls aged 15-19 globally. Pregnant girls also face other health risks and complications due to their immature bodies. This number however greatly increases in countries where abortion is prohibited or highly restricted. A staggering 3.9 million unsafe abortions occur each year to girls aged 15-19yrs ( Plan International). What we can do. End poverty. Keep girls in school and give them a future that is more attractive than early parenthood. Adress socio-cultural norms that enable teenage pregnancies. Call on governments to strengthen national health systems and to implement comprehensive education on sexuality and relationships in and out of schools. Make contraceptives available to young girls who have become sexualy active. Support young mothers in continuing with their education. #EndGBV #Day12ofactivismagainstGBV

Stigma, language barriers and lack of comprehensive #SexEd in schools hinder access to contraceptives, especially among marginalized communities. To address this, PAI partner Observatorio de mortalidad materna in Mexico (OMM) launched a digital campaign designed by and for Indigenous youth. Using posts, videos and podcasts, the campaign covers topics like adolescent pregnancy and contraceptive methods, as well as access to health services and the right to care. I am currently speaking on X space about a pressing issue affecting many young lives: the rise of #TeenPregnancy in Kenya. The discussion is highlighting several critical factors contributing to this alarming trend, including the lack of comprehensive #SexEducation , poverty, cultural norms, and limited access to contraception. Through my experiences in the #HealthCare sector, I’ve seen firsthand how systemic issues within our healthcare systems can increase the vulnerability of young mothers. These challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, shortage of trained professionals, inaccessible and unaffordable services lead to insufficient care for young mothers, putting both them and their children at risk. As a community, we must work together to reshape cultural norms and support adolescent sexual health education and empowerment. By promoting open dialogue, involving community leaders, and implementing educational programs, we can make a difference. Society plays a crucial role in preventing early pregnancy and marriage by educating young people about sexual health, challenging harmful norms, and providing economic and educational opportunities for girls. Technology also offers a platform for spreading accurate information and connecting young people to necessary resources. However, our healthcare system still falls short in supporting young mothers adequately. Addressing this requires targeted investments and policy changes to fill these gaps. The World Health Assembly (#WHA) has passed a critical resolution to address the alarming stagnation in reducing maternal and child mortality rates.   Currently, far too many lives are lost to preventable causes: each year, 287,000 women die during #pregnancy or #childbirth, and nearly 5 million children don't reach their fifth birthday. Strengthening #primary healthcare access, particularly #maternity, sexual and reproductive, and child health services, is crucial to reverse this trend.   The resolution emphasizes the need for well-equipped facilities, well-trained #healthcare workers, and access to safe water and sanitation to deliver #qualitycare.   By accelerating progress and focusing on the leading causes of maternal and child deaths, particularly in the most affected countries of the #globalsouth, we can achieve the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (#SDG). However, significant strides are needed: current progress must be multiplied by 4 to 9 times to reach these goals.   This is a critical moment for #globalhealth. This year, National Women’s Health Week (which we think should be every week!) is dedicated to empowering women to take charge of their health journeys and highlighting health issues unique to women. We know a little something about this mission—because it’s the work we do every day. Here are a couple of the problems (❌) and Caraway’s solutions (✅): ❌Gen Z women’s reproductive health services are severely limited—they’re the first generation growing up with fewer reproductive rights than their mothers had. 19 million women live in contraceptive deserts, and 88% of women face at least one barrier to getting access to oral contraceptives. ✅ That’s why Caraway is providing non-judgemental, supportive, evidence-based reproductive healthcare services and making it easy for members to access birth control options, counseling, and prescriptions via our app. ❌Women are also disproportionately affected by other health conditions, including headache disorders, autoimmune disorders, and anxiety and depression, with these mental health concerns exacerbated by the lack of bodily autonomy and access to the sexual and reproductive health services they need. ✅ That’s why Caraway is meeting the unique needs of Gen Z women through a holistic approach that won’t judge them, make assumptions, or charge them an amount they’re unprepared for—all while addressing mental, physical, and reproductive health as intertwined aspects of their experience.
