Bringing Offshore Wind Manufacturing to New Bedford, Massachusetts: Avangrid is partnering with global offshore wind lifting equipment manufacturer Liftra, committing the seed funding and supply procurement to establish the first-in-the-nation “davit crane” manufacturing facility at the South Coast Mills site near the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal. Davit cranes lift equipment and tools for workers to build, maintain and repair the turbines, and are a critical component for offshore wind turbines not currently manufactured in the US. Project submissions in Massachusetts demonstrate the power of offshore wind to deliver local economic benefits. New Bedford is slated to be home to the first US manufacturing facility for cranes capable of building the wind turbines that currently come from overseas. 💡To date, the assembly of wind turbine generators (WTG) onto floating offshore substructures has taken place at the quayside, before being towed to the offshore farm site. However, as the industry moves towards commercialisation using larger turbines installed in deeper waters, this method may not be suitable or cost-effective for larger commercial projects due to factors such as weather restrictions for tow-outs, quayside capacity and length, harbour water depth restrictions and onshore crane capacity at the port.  The Stick Building Wind Turbine Generators On-Site (SBOS) project, built upon previous projects to further identify and assess innovative methods and technologies to assemble WTG at the wind farm site.  1. Assess and evaluate different innovations and enabling technologies that permit WTG assembly at floating offshore wind farm sites;  2. Outline and define the operational procedures for stick-building on site;  3. Determine the limitations for on-site assembly and identify potential major showstoppers;  4. Analyse and compare the workability of various installation methodologies.   The SBOS project was delivered by Heerema Engineering Solutions under the Carbon Trust’s Floating Wind JIP. 👀 Read more in the full report https://lnkd.in/eVaV52TB #OffshoreWindEnergy #Renewables #FloatingWind #Innovation

CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON HE DREIHT OFFSHORE WIND MEGA-PROJECT Construction is underway on one of Germany's largest offshore wind farms - the 960 MW He Dreiht project in the North Sea. Developer EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG has begun installing the first of hundreds of monumental monopile foundations for the €2.4 billion wind farm. The Thialf floating crane recently positioned the first 70-metre long, 1,350-ton steel monopile foundations on the seabed 85 km off the island of Borkum. At peak times, over 500 workers and 60 ships will be involved in construction. He Dreiht will use 15 MW Vestas turbines, with the components currently being manufactured in parallel. The turbines and array cables will be installed in early 2025, allowing the full wind farm to enter operation late next year. 🔎Focus on a second-hand project: heading for the North-East of France. Following the shutdown of one of its wind turbines, our customer turned to MDWind for a full replacement. The installation permits and the windfarm technology meant that a new machine could not be installed, so a second-hand wind turbine was the obvious solution. After an in-depth inspection, we were able to define the stages of the project and supply the components needed to get the machine up and running again. The nacelle, hub and blades were completely replaced. From transporting the components, partial refurbishing them on site and installing them right through to finishing, we took charge of the overall management of the operation. #secondhand #windenergy #renewableenergy #repowering #projectmanagement

The team behind the 1.4 GW Cenos floating offshore wind project in Scotland is gearing up for a nearshore survey campaign this March to revalidate data collected in 2017 by the NorthConnect AS interconnector project. Starting March 11th, export cable corridor surveys aboard the Seafast Don are set to take between three to ten days, weather permitting. The campaign includes mapping the seabed with a multibeam echo sounder along a 150-meter-wide corridor from landfall to a 12-nautical-mile point offshore. Key habitats will be identified using an ROV and video surveys, providing a live video feed to the vessel. Seven 100-meter transects within a 500-meter corridor will be scrutinized. Located off Peterhead, 200 kilometers offshore in the UK Central North Sea, the Cenos project is a collaboration between Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, contributing 1.4 GW to the region's renewable energy landscape. AC power generated by the floating wind farm will be routed to a substation platform and exported to nearby oil and gas platforms. The substation includes a converter station for transporting DC power to shore and integration into the grid.
