💰Name 3 famous economists… Who have you named? Adam Smith? John Maynard Keynes? David Ricardo? Milton Friedman? Karl Marx? These are all incredible economists who actively shaped the economic discourse of their time. But what else do they have in common? Only 3 of the 93 Nobel Laureates in Economics have been women, and Claudia Goldin (who won in 2023 for having advanced understandings of women's labor market outcomes) was the first female to win the prize solo. Data from LSE shows that, in 2020, only 9% of Bank Chief Economists were female. Where are all the female economists? 📸There are many people, including Goldin herself, who put this down - in part - to economics having an image problem. When you think of economics, you likely think of finance; in fact, only 17% of those with an economics degree work in this sector.
