Combined TV and streaming viewership across live and recorded highlights from the roughly 17 days of competition have exceeded NBC's expectations amidst the evolving landscape of digital media. Recent Games faced challenges, but NBC's streaming service Peacock, with 33 million paid subscribers, saw significant success with a strategic decision to stream key events live, resulting in record-breaking viewership. Notably, the U.S. women's gymnastics team, men's basketball final, and women's national soccer team win were among the most-watched moments. The Paris Olympics also leveraged social media to enhance viewer engagement, offering a diverse range of content and storylines. Imagine watching the Olympic Games and only hearing the pounding on the floor as someone runs and the cheering in the background ... without seeing anything on screen. Most broadcasters only offer subtitles and captions, which only help those with hearing impairments. So it's really great to see that NBCUniversal are adding Audio Descriptions and enhanced closed captioning to the coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 making it accessible to more viewers and listeners so they can enjoy the excitement of the Olympic Games too. Great to see this Gary Zenkel and Thomas Wlodkowski - look forward to seeing more from NBCUniversal (and I hope more broadcasters adopt this too). 🇺🇸 Steven Spielberg opened the summer Olympics by narrating “Land of Stories”, a short film about the power of storytelling - and how the Olympics has always been “the perfect template for a story.” 📚 As a life-long athlete, I couldn’t agree more. Sports is where I first learned: 💪🏻 Grit & determination 🚧 A ‘work-hard’ ethic 🤝 Teamwork ❌ Acceptance of defeat 🚀 Rising up from failure But, as Spielberg highlighted, one of the greatest things about sports is: “The characters… and the humanity they express through their empathy for others” ❤️ As viewers, we expect good sportsmanship. We love the stories of fellow athletes carrying those struggling across a finish line or picking up an opponent when their body collapses from the pain of defeat 🫴🏻 We applaud players who hug teammates after they make an irreversible mistake telling them they did their best 🤗 We expect handshakes from every player and coach in the game and we tear up when the winners acknowledge the efforts of the losers in their post-game comments 🤝 We expect this from sports because athletes have always behaved this way… … Because athletes deeply understand that success - or failure - is never individually owned. With the Olympics coming up in less than two weeks, the question is what changes are needed in the business model of the Games? Gene Sykes, chairman of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, was quoted last autumn: “We need to reinvent our business models…rekindle the unique appeal of this movement with a new generation of fans.” The financial models that have sustained the movement since 1984 need to be reimagined. NBC’s $7.65 billion deal through 2032 drives IOC revenues, and several long-standing sponsors are unlikely to renew after Paris. US viewership was 15.5 million primetime viewers on NBC and its digital platforms for Tokyo in 2021, vs. 26.7 million for Rio in 2016 and 31.1 million for London 2012.
