Gentle musings – the value of “why not” in career decisions. I reflect that my career has evolved more often by me saying "why not?", rather than proactive career management. This post is prompted from recalling being offered the Global eCommerce Legal Director role in 2017.  It was a promotion, more money.  It was fairly high focus, an emerging area of law; I knew I wasn’t first choice and I still felt junior.  Contracting was far and away my biggest strength as a lawyer, so my imposter syndrome and the move outside of my comfort zone made it all a little scary.  I also felt that after just two years supporting Global Procurement, I was nowhere near what I wanted to implement to drive Legal support excellence.  The idea of pivoting to a new role with so much unfinished business was really tough. I toyed with the decision for way longer than needed.  I got counsel from as many people as possible and will always be grateful to everybody who gave me their time.  Amongst much wonderful support, I want to mention two specific pieces of advice. One was Richard Reed telling me that anybody would be "a total idiot" if they didn't take an opportunity to learn from Anthony Jenkinson. He was absolutely right.  There are certain people who if you can work with them, you almost certainly should. The second was a pep talk from Emily Fleuriot (she/her).  She reminded me of two things. First, that I'd made “why not” decisions in the past, which had got me this far.  Second, that if I’m good enough and work hard enough, new opportunities almost always (eventually) move me uphill. I had a third impactful piece of advice after my switch was announced. Speaking with Xavier Benti on my unfinished business in Procurement, he said "You need three years in every role - one year to work out what is happening and what you want to do, one year to implement, one year to take the benefit. Reckitt gives you two years".  I resolved then to try to shorten my "first year" as much as reasonably possible for every potential role. I try to do this by always retaining curiosity and an open mind, and also never thinking that a conversation (eg in team meetings) is so outside of my remit that I don't need to understand it.  This thinking has really helped me when starting new roles later – possibly examples for another day.   It was a great call by Richard Walker to put me in that eCommerce role.  The role impacted my career like this unexpected meteor shower hitting Paris. Ok it’s an awful metaphor, but I’ve started shoehorning Armageddon references into these reflections and I have no intention to stop now.   I’d love to hear thoughts and insights from others.  Have you had similar moments where you’ve taken a leap of faith, do have you gained from a more purposeful method? Are there different moments where each will work better? ❤️🔥 What a difference a touch of positivity and passion has! I’ve had such an enjoyable first few weeks at The Old Courthouse in Cheltenham and although there is much work to be done, I cannot stress how exciting it is to be part of the project we’re building here. It’s amazing how passion, positivity and direction is all you need to engage a team and help them get firing in the right direction. I don’t think we value it enough in Hospitality. 🌟Care about your team. 🌟Care for your guests. 🌟Set goals that you can all strive together for as a unit. One thing I will always remember from a mentor of mine; 🌟Hospitality isn’t just customer service, labour costs and financial percentages. 🌟It’s about how you make your guests ‘FEEL’ and leaving your venue with a happy memory of the service and staff, the atmosphere and the experience. If we can get this part right it’s more than half the battle we have as leaders in the industry.
