I recently revisited where it all began – my very first design project at Greeley and Hansen Engineers. Almost 23 years later, driving by the Michigan Avenue Reservoir and Booster Pump Station site, memories flooded back. Starting my engineering career, Greeley and Hansen gave me the chance to dive into real design work. It wasn't without challenges, but those early days taught me some important lessons. Initiative is Key: Young engineers, take note. Don't expect your path to be outlined by the company. Seize opportunities, showcase your abilities, and take the lead in shaping your career. Constructive Criticism Fuels Growth: Getting my work critiqued wasn't easy, but it was key to my development. Those reviews molded me into a better engineer and instilled the habit of meticulous self-review before submission. Passion and Clear Communication: Initiating change, infusing passion into design work, and communicating clearly are pillars of success in this field. I'm grateful Greeley and Hansen took a chance on me in 2001. The tough mentors back then were guiding me to become a true engineer. Here's to appreciating the journey and the lessons from my first project – they continue to guide me today. #Engineering #CareerPath Greeley and Hansen | A TYLin Company

Check out this quick interview with Steve Huizinga on how the Construction Careers Council is facing down the labor shortage in the West Michigan construction industry!
In a recent interview with WZZM's 13 ON YOUR SIDE, Steve Huizinga got to share about the Construction Traveling Roadshow put on by the Construction Careers Council and West Michigan Works! The purpose of the roadshow is to help create a diverse and qualified construction workforce. Steve explains that the next ten years present a turning point for the construction industry as a large group of long-time workers are set to retire. Worse, there’s no pipeline right now to fill the roles being vacated. He emphasized that the industry needs people right now to learn from the very experienced workers leaving the workforce. "We're focused on...getting the next generation of tradespeople. Educating them about what the trades are, how it is a great career option,” says Steve. More importantly the Construction Careers Council wants the students to know that a trade career is a “traditional” choice. "We educate them about how it is a great career. It doesn't have to be nontraditional. It's just a different career path...it's a first tier career path, and it's a great option for any and all." If you know potential workers, including teenagers and young adults, wanting to connect with employers, they can reach out to West Michigan Works! or the West Michigan Construction Institute.

Consultant, Real Estate Advisor, Adjunct Professor, Career Coach, Chief Engagement Officer, Georgia Tech graduate.
Today’s thankful and thriving Thursday is dedicated to everyone who participated in Stone Mountain High School’s Career Exploration Day! I want to give a huge shout-out to Sydney Matheny, Asst. Project Manager from HITT Contracting and Sherle Brown of the Real Estate Career Academy and UGA for joining me to promote careers in real estate. Sherle, Sydney, and I shared that our industry has more than 500,000 open positions ranging from A to Z including construction and property management. I was so encouraged by these motivated students eager to join the workforce. Did you or a team member spend time in a classroom this week? If not, why not? Are you simply relying on your recruiting team to sift through inbound inquiries or are you willing to get in the classroom and fire these students up for opportunities in your company? Think of a person who invested in you. Knowledge doesn’t simply come out of a book, it comes through experience. The best way to harvest the best and the brightest is to be with them on the front line in the classroom. Long-term success happens organically. Plant. Cultivate. Harvest. Get thirsty for new talent and tune into classrooms! #RECA #experientiallearning #staythirsty #RPMCareers #CTAE #CareerPathways

As long as the world is self organizing, the people in it must be able to self organize too. If someone had a degree in farriery, if there was such a thing, and the automobile industry replaced horses at light speeds, thus, the similarities between the two different times, now v then, employers want to know, do you have any improvisation left in you, or was it diminished in your time being educated? The biggest opportunity today is your ability to adapt to the evolving environment. Can you walk into an organization and heal that which the environment is struggling with? Is your life about you or is your life about the lives of everyone that you touch? Is there a degree in empathy, courage, acknowledgement, curiosity, thinking imaginatively, and improvisation? The greatest need will be in the field of awareness and transformation and how to deal with the challenges presented by the status quo, where 99.99999999% of the people believe that the status quo is out there, some where, not knowing that the status quo is within the gap between the brain and consciousness! The gap is the time interval between sensory input, cognitive processing, and conscious reasoning and response. If your RDLPFC is compromised, then you’re stuck!
I need to phone my LinkedIn network on this one because I can't get these stats to square. If 75% of new jobs require a college degree, while only 40% of applicants have one, then why on earth are 52% of recent college graduates underemployed? New report out today from Burning Glass Institute and Strada Education Network showing 52% of college grads are underemployed a year after graduation and - even more damningly - 45% remain so a DECADE after graduation. Links to both references in comments below. #crazy #highered #highereducation

Career Counselor & Employer Relations Manager. Educator. Mentor. Believer in Possibilities. Neuroscience geek. Doggie parent.
As a #career counselor in the sustainability and climate action world, I focus on learning and teaching about tools and strategies to help professionals succeed in doing and developing #greenjobs and #sustainabilityjobs, with the growing awareness that in the #futureofwork, professions of ALL stripes are going to have to integrate parameters of #greenjobs. Interesting to think about how legal or financial or academic or (fill in the blank here) roles are going to integrate these parameters to remain attractive to employees. A couple of definitions (what can I say? Academic & praxis-based articles make me happy. 🤣): ‘’Sustainability jobs: jobs that improve human well-being and strengthen social equity, while reducing environmental harms Green jobs: jobs that reduce negative environmental impacts’’* *From the article, ’Sustainability Careers,’ by Christopher Boone, Erin Bromaghim and Anne Kapuscinski. Annual Review of Environment and Resources. (Annu. Rev. Environ. Resour. 2023. 48:589–613.) #geekingout #greenjobs #futureofwork #careeradvisor
