More or differently sourced funding for SafeSport is not the answer to reducing or preventing sexual abuse in sports. SafeSport is overwhelmed mainly because the underlying approach to abuse prevention it promotes is incapable of keeping children and athletes safe. Until the underlying approach is updated (it's years behind best practices), SafeSport's case backlog will continue to grow. The approach - the safe environment - consists of criminal background checks, adult/athlete interaction policies, and training. These are essential controls, but they're nothing like what's needed to keep children and athletes safe. The Commission's proposal to make SafeSport independent makes sense. But it also needs to consider SafeSport's purpose. Asking SafeSport to be the research developer of new and better abuse prevention practices, the helpful guide to adopting those practices, the policeman enforcing minimum practices, and the criminal investigator of failed practices is a seriously conflicted set of activities. All of which is only made much worse by the fundamentally inadequate abuse prevention practices. Coincidence? I don't think so. The new law should split SafeSport's mandate between best practices and policing roles. Throwing more money at a conflicted mandate arguably just creates a new set of skewed incentives that the Commission rightly says plague sports in other ways. https://lnkd.in/gj3_xQV2

Our Respect & Reward Scheme continues, with our first Rewards Draw scheduled for 6th December with Northumberland Football Association partners Collingwood. All teams who have scored 100% Positive, and all referees who have taken part in the project upto that point, will be in with a chance to win some early Christmas gifts! With such a high focus on poor behaviour in football, from both within the game and the media, it's important to recognise the VAST majority involved in grassroots football are brilliant people and are the reason why millions play, referee, and volunteer in grassroots football every week. The data provides some valuable context at how low a percentage do behave poorly. However, as team numbers have increased to over 2,000 in our region for the first time ever, an increase of 551 from from 2015/16, that 2% that lets football down becomes a bigger number, and unfortunately it becomes easier to be projected as representative of all of football. Through this project, helping to recognise and promote positive behaviour, matched with our FA Discipline procedures to sanction behaviour that breaches FA Rules, we hope to reduce the percentage of poor behaviour even further. We also have new plans to grow Respect & Reward further in the New Year.

Today, I'm going to address a current issue that reminds us of the importance of sports professionals working together with other sectors of society to tackle the problem of violence in sports, specifically in football. The incident occurred in France, where the bus of Olympique Lyon was stoned upon arrival at the Vélodrome, the stadium of Olympique de Marseille, and the coach was injured by the shattered glass. The game was eventually suspended. Violence in football not only put at risk the safety of players, coaches, and fans but also tarnishes the image and the sports industry itself, going against its intrinsic values, such as being a tool for bringing people together, while also alienating true sports enthusiasts. It is the responsibility of sports management professionals and other stakeholders, in collaboration with the media, law enforcement, and the government, to proactively address this issue and take measures to promote a healthier environment that doesn't drive families away from the product that is football. These measures may include: - Implementing and enforcing heavier sanctions against those who engage in such acts to deter future incidents, such as banning individuals not only from sports venues but also the surrounding areas on game days. - Legal consequences, including fines or imprisonment, and mandatory participation in an "anti-sports violence" training program. - Enhancing security at games with a higher risk factor, with the anticipation and patrol of all areas where buses will pass, as well as expanding the security perimeter around them concerning fans and attempting to prevent encounters between fans of rival clubs. - Education and awareness through collaboration with schools to instill the importance of handling interactions with fans of other clubs in a healthy way from a young age, promoting respect, tolerance, and non-violence, thus encouraging a change in the existing (lack of) sports culture among fans. #SportsManagement #Football #ViolenceInSports #UnitedForSports #UELinkedInMKTChallenge4

It's clear that placing a strict 2-year limit on fixed-term contracts presents a significant hurdle for sporting organisations which rely heavily on such contracts for their operations. This restriction might complicate the ability of sporting clubs to effectively manage their teams and secure talent, ultimately posing challenges to their strategic planning and continuity. Flexibility in contract duration reflected by the recent 6-year contract reportedly signed by Damien Hardwick to coach the Gold Coast Suns is crucial for the dynamic nature of sport.
