Storyteller & Promoter of Mental Health, Resilience & Hope | Keynote Speaker | Sharing Lessons from My Journey with Gambling Addiction
REMINDER: Michael Sciandra and I are presenting “Extra! Extra! Read SOME About It!” on Friday, July 19 from 11:15-12:15 pacific time. If you are attending the National Council on Problem Gambling Conference on Gambling Addiction and Responsible Gambling, I hope to see you at this engaging discussion. Session abstract: For those sharing their own lived experiences in problem gambling, media interactions can be daunting. Media involvement is a valuable piece of educating the public on problem gambling-related topics. However, it is important that the stories and information conveyed through the media remain consistent, neutral, confidential, trauma-informed, and engaging. Regardless of the specifics of your personal journey, learn how to share your own problem gambling recovery story in a manner that allows your community to learn more about problem gambling prevention and recovery in a manner that promotes hope, inclusivity, and action. #speaking #gambling #ncpg #addiction #conference

Please listen to this. The more that can be done to broaden the debate and get people talking about gambling related harms the better ... the first step in thinking and acting differently!
This is a difficult share for me but an important one. It blurs the lines between my professional and personal identity, but I want to use my lived experience to raise awareness of a topic that needs more attention. 18 months into the pandemic, gambling harms entered my personal life, for a second time, and wreaked havoc. I experienced an identity crisis. Overnight, my sense of who I was shifted from ‘criminal justice professional’ to ‘gambler’s wife’. I became the ‘affected other’ of the research papers I had read. Labels that I hadn’t chosen and didn’t quite fit with how I saw myself. The stigma attached to this addiction is visceral, and not just for the individual battling the addiction, but for those closest to them. There are plenty of books on how to navigate an infidelity, a divorce, or how to cope when your partner develops cancer, but I could not find one on what to do when presented with harmful gambling addiction in your relationship. This, in part, is my attempt at filling that void. https://lnkd.in/eVzg4WFe Informed by restorative approaches, my new podcast series One Harm Two Voices invites you to listen in on the raw, unfiltered conversation of two people sitting on different, at times opposite, sides of a harmful experience. In our pilot episode, which launches today, the focus is on gambling harms. Patrick Foster, Founder and Director of Gam-ed (Gambling, Addiction and Mental Health Talks) and author of ‘Might Bite’ will be sharing his experience of developing and recovering from a severe and sustained gambling addiction. As podcast creator, I will be putting myself in the guest seat and sharing my personal experiences of being an ‘affected other’, financially and emotionally harmed by the gambling addiction of my long-term partner. Restorative Practices facilitator Joanne Ramsey, will be hosting the conversation. It is my hope that our pilot episode will instil some hope in those listeners impacted by gambling harms and some pointers on what has helped others repair and recover. “One day you will tell your story of how you overcame what you went through, and it will be someone else’s survival guide”. Brené Brown With thanks to my partner for allowing me to tell this very personal story. With thanks to James Milloy (Producer), Patrick Foster Joanne Ramsey, Louise Raven-Tiémélé and Samson Yinka for your support in making this happen and getting it over the line. Tagging National Council on Problem Gambling as March is Problem Gambling Awareness month in the US. Note: this is a passion project and not linked to my substantive role.

We aren't going to stop the next mass shooter, but we can stop a future mass shooter. Here's How: Shift mental health care towards other healthcare models that focus on preventative efforts. Get rid of the red flag laws that prevent gun owners from seeking professional help. Educate mental health professionals on how to better help gun owners. These things won't be impactful overnight, but if invested in, they would likely stop a would be mass shooter.
