Went to a very interesting event last night at a super trendy "house-office" in San Francisco with a killer view (Fifty Years Venture Capital - thanks to the team for hosting!) The night's theme centered on Decentralized Science (#DeSci). The aim of DeSci is to establish a system that funds and rewards scientists globally, irrespective of their institutional affiliations. DeSci is working on a system where good ideas can thrive by decentralizing access to funding, scientific resources, and communication channels[1]. Democratizing science is not a new concept. So how is DeSci actually pulling this off? It helps to zoom into a couple of companies in this space to get an idea: Molecule AG and BioCrowd.IO Despite some differences, the overarching concept remains consistent: Molecule and BioCrowd are establishing a way for funders (professional and retail) to fund researchers. They streamline the process by assisting with contracts, sponsored research agreements, and patent licenses. Ultimate goal is to expedite translational research (bridging "the valley of death") by offering researchers easier access to capital and simplifying the investment process for funders. In Switzerland the Botnar Foundation has decided to invest more than 1 billion USD in top quality immune engineering science over the next 15 years. By the way the same breakthrough technology that Engimmune Therapeutics is also based on. Also - in contrast to Denmark where university professors receive zero funds from their employers - the Swiss universities are in the global top class. It is such ambitious initiatives - not least together with the very favourable economic conditions for entrepreneurs that enables Switzerland to attract and maintain world class entrepreneurs and venture capital - that keep the country among the global start-up elite. Denmark could learn A LOT from Switzerland.

When you are developing Life Sciences real estate for the future generations-built for sustainability and longevity- what factors are most important?
