There’s a reason we don’t need decades of research to study the long-term health implications of feeding chickens or fish insects. That’s because chickens and fish EVOLVED to eat insects (unlike ultra-processed soy or corn pellets). Insects represent low-to-no cost solutions for some of our biggest challenges. They’re already providing waste management, soil rehabilitation, and protein production “ecosystem services” in nature. If insects can solve so many of our problems, why isn’t this solution more widespread? A big part of the reason is that powerful companies (like chemical fertilizer companies) stand to lose a lot of $$$ when low-to-no cost alternatives become more widespread. Companies like Chapul Farms are working to create sensible business models to re-integrate insects into our agricultural industry at industrial scale. Another reason is that much of the total capital available for agtech investment has been invested into things like cultivated meat and plant-based… These industries have received hundreds of millions of dollars more than the insect industry.
