As increasing herbicide resistance impacts weed control options available to many growers, Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) senior field research officer Dr Charles Merfield (Merf) is advocating the benefits of reducing herbicide applications through mechanical weeding. We have a new paper published, comparing the CMFDA/FDA vital stain- and the Most Probable Number method on water treated by two ballast water management systems (BWMS) that use chlorination as disinfectant. The result is interesting as the Stain method, approved for BWMS testing by IMO and U.S. Coast Guard, revealed that 0 organisms (10-50 µm) survived the treatment. However, several organisms appeared in grow-outs following 14 days incubation using the MPN-method, presently only approved by IMO. The a most probable number was ca. 6 organisms/mL for both systems, approaching the regulatory limit for discharged ballast water: 10 organisms/ml. You can access our paper free of charge until 3.
