Mechanisms of Plant Natural Immunity and the Role of Selected Oxylipins as Molecular Mediators in Plant Protection by Piotr Barbaś, Dominika Skiba, Piotr Pszczółkowski and Barbara Sawicka* *corresponding Author Abstract Weed resistance to herbicides should be minimized, as this can lead to serious limitations in the food security for people around the world. The aim of the research was to summarize the latest research on the reactions of plants to pesticides, including herbicides, in order to assess the possibility of using jasmonates and brassinosteroids to stimulate the natural, induced systemic immunity of plants, as well as outline the possibility of the interaction of oxylipins with ethylene, salicylates and other compounds. Multiple types of resistance correspond to developed mechanisms of resistance to more than one herbicide, and this resistance has been induced by selection processes. Activation of the mechanisms of systemic immunity depends on the reception of extracellular signals, and their transduction between individual cells of the plant organism. Jasmonic acid (JA), as well as its methyl ester (MeJA), ethylene (ET), salicylic acid (SA) and methyl salicylate (MeSA), are key plant growth regulators that play a fundamental role in this process. JA and ET activate the mechanisms of induced systemic immunity (ISR), while SA determines the acquired systemic immunity (SAR). JA, MeJA and OPDA belong to the family of oxylipins, which are derivatives of linolenic acid (CLA), and are a group of active signaling molecules that are involved in the regulation of many physiological processes, including those that are related to herbicide resistance. Understanding the signaling mechanism in oxylipins, and mainly brassicosteroids (BRs) and jasmonates (Jas), would allow a better understanding of how immune responses are triggered in plants.

Moa Technology Announces Breakthrough Results in Herbicide Field Trials Oxford University spin-out Moa Technology has announced successful results from multi-country field trials of new herbicide classes with novel modes of action. These trials mark a significant advancement in the fight against weeds, which pose a growing threat to global food security. With over 270 weed species now resistant to current commercial herbicides, Moa’s discoveries offer a much-needed solution for farmers. In trials conducted across diverse climatic zones, Moa’s novel herbicide compounds demonstrated robust efficacy in both pre- and post-emergence applications in crops like wheat, maize, and soybeans. The trials, which included field sites in the U.S., Spain, France, and the UK, showed that Moa’s compounds consistently achieved over 85% control of problematic weeds, such as pigweed, kochia, and foxtail, even at low application rates. Two of the herbicide candidates performed better on a gram-for-gram basis than existing commercial products, indicating their potential as highly effective alternatives. Syngenta has Received Authorization for Its Groundbreaking Cereal Fungicide, Miravis® Plus, In Great Britain Syngenta's eagerly anticipated fungicide product, MIRAVIS® Plus, has obtained authorization for use in Great Britain, marking a significant milestone. The approval, granted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on April 3, 2024, encompasses the active substance pydiflumetofen. According to Lizzie Carr-Archer, Syngenta's cereal fungicide portfolio manager, MIRAVIS® Plus, featuring pydiflumetofen (ADEPIDYN® technology) alongside the proven triazole fungicide prothioconazole, is now approved for application on various arable crops, including winter and spring wheat and barley. Trials have demonstrated MIRAVIS® Plus' exceptional efficacy against key diseases such as Septoria tritici in wheat, and net blotch and Ramularia in barley. Additionally, it exhibits robust potency against Rhynchosporium in barley and leads to significant reductions in Fusarium head blight and DON mycotoxin in wheat. ADEPIDYN® technology, under development in the UK for seven years, has been successfully registered and utilized in numerous wheat-growing regions worldwide, with Miravis emerging as the leading fungicide brand in Canada. In the UK alone, over 500 trials have been conducted, showcasing visible enhancements in green leaf area retention and notable yield improvements, even in barley where disease pressure is minimal. Following the introduction of ADEPIDYN® technology to the UK in 2021, two additional years of comprehensive trials have been conducted, reinforcing its effectiveness.
