In 2021, after 8 years at JP Morgan, I decided to leave and explore new career opportunities. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a job. It had been about 8 long years that I had not looked out. Then, the first offer letter I received was way more than I expected. For a few moments, I couldn’t believe it as I read the offer email. A week after the first, I received the second and the third… And before I knew it, I had secured 5 offers on the table from top tech companies. From thinking about whether I would even get an offer to choose from 5, it all happened so fast that I had no time to think. Among all, there was one from Amazon that I did not think I would crack :-) I just wanted to experience the interview process of MAANG organizations for senior positions. I was in a great position to negotiate and get the best for myself, and I did. In January 2022, I joined Amazon as an engineering manager. I’ve worked at many places, but this time I learned the true art of negotiation. Negotiation can be easily misunderstood as just about salary. I’ve done so myself. But your salary is only one part of it, it includes a lot more: - Your job responsibilities - Your work flexibility - Benefits and Perks Highly recommend reading the book ‘Never Split The Difference.’ You can apply the techniques from there and achieve: - Favorable outcomes with better communication - Improved negotiation skills - Better confidence

A year ago, I lost my job in the recruitment team at Amazon. It was a shock. I was considering HR roles at the time when an opportunity to move to sales came up. It wasn't something I had considered back then but the company intrigued me. I wondered, "How will this look on my CV? Can I return to HR later?" Yet, something inside told me to take this chance. Looking back on this decision, I saw the overlap between HR and sales. In both roles, you're reaching out, making connections, selling a vision—whether it's the promise of a career or the benefits of a service. Moving from corporate to startup life was a big change. It was faster, more personal, and sometimes chaotic. But the learning was immense. Now, I'm grateful for that decision. Skills I developed in HR, like empathetic listening and clear communication, have become my strengths in sales. I'm sharing this because, to me, what truly stands out isn't just the shift from HR to sales or from corporate to startup. It's the realization that our cherished skills can find a place in unexpected roles. So, to anyone standing at the crossroads of change, feeling the weight of uncertainty, remember this: Your skills, your experiences, and your unique perspective have incredible value, in places you might not have even considered yet.
