The Tobacco Endgame has been a long and arduous battle. It is time to finalize these rules. The health of our kids and community depend on it. We won't stop sounding the alarm or raising our voices until it's done. “This administration has an opportunity for a defining achievement to prevent disease and death from tobacco use. The administration itself estimates that up to 654,000 lives, including up to 238,000 Black lives, could be saved over the next 40 years if menthol cigarettes are no longer available in the United States. It also estimates that 9,000 premature deaths can be attributed to regular cigar smoking, defined as smoking cigars on 15 or more of the past 30 days; approximately 5,200 of these premature deaths occur in regular cigar smokers who did not also smoke cigarettes." #publichealth #mentholban #menthol #flavoredtobacco #tobacco #tobaccocontrol

It is always challenging for government agencies to communicate with the general public. Layer on the complex history of a government agency that was involved in enforcing the isolation of individuals suffering from Hansen's Disease and the term "communication challenges" is more than appropriate. I'm really impressed with the informational website that the Department of Health has created to tell the story of Kalaupapa Settlement and to explain the current coordination efforts among the many different government agencies that are involved with managing the area.
