Today I am thrilled to introduce Haldi Mama – a first-of-its-kind curation of skincare for the pregnancy journey. The world does not prepare women for pregnancy.  Women enter this chapter of their life with no direction, limited resources and left alone to do all of the research on what changes they need to make during this critical phase of their life. When it comes to skincare, oftentimes, the research doesn’t exist or It’s overwhelming/confusing on which ingredients are safe to use and which are not. Recognizing this gap in pregnancy research, we founded The Pregnancy Offender Research Project. We partnered with a public health researcher and consulted with cosmetic chemists, toxicologists, endocrinologists, essential oil experts, and herbalists to establish a list of ingredients that are not considered safe to use during pregnancy. The list includes over 3,000 ingredients that are hormone disruptors, reproductive and developmental toxicants or pregnancy contraindications. We call them Pregnancy Offenders and have been completely banned from Haldi Mama. Thus we can say with confidence that Haldi Mama is a first-of-its-kind curation of pregnancy skincare vetted to the highest standard of safety. We know that a woman's body endures some incredible changes during pregnancy, that they have to recover from during the postpartum period. But the same can be said for the postpartum mind. I see many expectant and new moms in my practice because my gentle, non-cracking, approach is safe and suitable for pregnant and postpartum mothers. Naturally I am often treating the new parent’s body but we often chat about how other aspects of the postpartum journey are going. We’ve all heard of the common “baby blues' ' as hormones are trying to balance and everyone is exhausted, it's no surprise that this wreaks havoc on a new mother’s emotions. But recently I talked with a patient about a nightly phenomenon often referred to as the “sundown scaries.” Have you heard of this? Many mothers report feelings of anxiety, sadness and even dread as the day comes to an end. And until pretty recently, this experience caught a lot of moms off guard. Blogs, parenting websites and social media are creating more awareness around some of the lesser known after-effects of giving birth. This is something I hope to do with my upcoming book as well! Just as I am researching the lesser known effects of pregnancy, I’d also love to hear your stories of unexpected aspects, both physical and emotional, of the postpartum experience. “For example, at 48 hours, the average infant born vaginally has lost 7 percent of body weight, and 5 percent of infants have lost more than 10 percent.” Low birth weight is most often caused by being born too early (premature birth). That means before 37 weeks of pregnancy. A premature baby has less time in the pregnant person's womb (uterus) to grow and gain weight. Much of a baby's weight is gained during the last weeks of pregnancy. Another cause of low birth weight is a condition called intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). This occurs when a baby does not grow well during pregnancy. It may be because of problems with the placenta, the pregnant person's health, or the baby's health. Babies can have IUGR and be: Full term. That means born from 37 to 41 weeks of pregnancy. These babies may be physically mature but small. Premature. 💡Did you know that a baby in the mother's womb stops significantly gaining weight after the 40th week of pregnancy? Data analysis shows that the average birth weight stabilizes in the final weeks of pregnancy. But why does this happen? There are several reasons:   🔹The space in the uterus is already maximally utilized, limiting further growth of the baby. 🔹The placenta reaches its peak function around the 37-40th week and may then become less effective. 🔹Hormonal changes in both the mother and the fetus affect the baby's growth rate. 🔹The bodies of the mother and the baby are preparing for childbirth, which involves metabolic changes. 🔹The newborn accumulates more fat tissue, crucial for regulating body temperature after birth, but it doesn't translate into a significant increase in body weight.   Look at the chart below!
