Doing is sometimes the best way to get things started...
Skansa USA recently concluded a 90 day trial with an electric Volvo Construction Equipment excavator supplied by Sunbelt Rentals, Inc. in Los Angeles. Why does this matter?
The construction market has a tendency to be slow to change. This isn't a criticism: if things work and get the job done, why change them? But in the transition to low and zero emission vehicles, there is often a lot of confusion and misinformation about what is and isn't possible.
Volvo has been involved in a number of trial projects around the world to show construction companies, dealers and operators what electric machinery can and cannot do, and how to make the best use of it. This is helping to boost adoption and dispel some of the preconceptions about a lack of performance or the ability to integrate charging into a shift pattern.
"The unit reduced carbon per hour by 66% (34 kilograms) and saved an estimated 74% in cost per hour ($15.15)."
At Interact Analysis we conclude in our research that all major OEMs and suppliers should be involved in this type of project at the moment to support the early market for electric machinery. Not only does it heighten exposure, but it can provide invaluable insight back into the design process to improve future machines.
What do you think? Should there be more doing? Take a look at our research on this topic at the link below.
