🚗🔌 The Employer's Tool for Introducing Electric Company Cars ⌛️ Estimated reading time : 2 minutes 🕒 The latest 'Grand Survey' (Grote Peiling) conducted by prominent media outlets including HLN, VTM Nieuws, RTL, and Le Soir reveals that 48% of Belgians have yet to fully embrace electric driving. 📊🇧🇪 This comprehensive survey, carried out between December 4th and 11th, 2023, polled 2,600 Belgians aged 18 and above, shedding light on significant regional variations. While 41% of Flemish residents are eager advocates of electric driving, the enthusiasm stands at only 38% for Brussels residents and a mere 30% for Walloons. 🌍 What are the major hurdles? Concerns encompass the lofty purchase price, charging tariffs, a constrained charging infrastructure, and a limited driving range per battery charge. People also express reservations regarding the environmental impact of battery production and the performance of batteries during cold winter days. ❄️🌿 The electrification of our vehicle fleet is rapidly gaining momentum, driven by the European Union's mandate for car manufacturers to exclusively introduce electric new vehicles starting in 2035. This aligns with a broader climate plan aimed at achieving carbon neutrality in Europe by 2050. 🌱🚗 This leads to an intriguing question: To what extent can an employer encourage an employee to embrace an electric company car? The answer pivots on the employment contract and the flexibility granted to the employer. Striking a balance between legal constraints and environmental consciousness is of paramount importance. ⚖️🤝 Exciting times lie ahead as the benefits of electric company cars become more evident, with implications for employees' take-home pay if they opt to persist with an internal combustion engine company car. Electric vehicles have become the mainstream of development in most countries in the context of sustainable development. In 2022, 26,356 electric vehicles were sold in Australia, accounting for 3.39% of new cars, a 65% increase from the 2% EV market share in 2021, however this market share is well below Europe, China and the United States. In Australia, the development of electric vehicles is limited by government welfare subsidies, infrastructure construction and prices, which has led to a lack of confidence in the purchase of electric vehicles. In this class, I learned if I could convey exactly what I wanted to say. I feel that it is not the data that is important but how you go about getting it across. That is what this class has been teaching this term. Luckily, during the course I met some of my mates who gave me some advice on how to get better at charting as well as teaching me how to represent the data content more accurately. Sweden is home to the highest percentage of automotive workers with an electric vehicle (EV) related skill versus any other country in Europe, according to LinkedIn's Economic Graph data. EV-related skills include battery testing, automotive electronics, charging, fuel cells, electric motors, power distribution and electric propulsion, but 38 skills were analysed in total. Almost one in 10 (9.43%) people who work in the automotive industry in Sweden have an EV-related skill listed on their LinkedIn profile. Gill Nowell, an EV market specialist, noted that Northvolt, Polestar and Volvo Group are all based in Sweden. "Of the legacy OEMs [original equipment manufacturers], Volvo arguably has the strongest sustainability criteria of them all," she said. Meanwhile, Roger Atkins, the founder of a consultancy that advises businesses on EV, said: "The family of companies operating in and around Gothenburg have pulled in talent from around the world, including China." He added: "It also helps to have a government and culture that embraces cleantech." Germany ranked second with 8.95% of automotive workers displaying an EV-related skill on their LinkedIn profiles, while the UK ranked third with 8.31% and France came in fourth with 4.28%.  Despite Sweden having the highest percentage of automotive workers with an EV-related skill on their LinkedIn profiles, this only equates to around 45,360 people. Meanwhile, Germany has 160,760, France has 97,700 and the UK has 91,440. Finding a way to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions is top of the agenda for most countries and many governments see EVs as part of the solution. However, for a successful transition to EVs, associated infrastructure also needs to grow. According to LinkedIn data, Italy, Sweden, Germany and the UK have the highest percentage of members with an EV skill operating in industries relating to EV infrastructure, such as utilities.    A recent survey by the World Employment Confederation found that a significant proportion of companies plan to hire people with green skills, with 81% of global respondents – and 88% of UK respondents – saying they will increasingly look for green skills in their workforce in the next five years. ✍ Sam Shead 📊 Akash Kaura (LinkedIn Economic Graph)

This surge undeniably translates to increased job opportunities for automotive professionals, especially in roles related to EV design, manufacturing, maintenance, and infrastructure development. However, for Europe to fully embrace the powertrain revolution, several steps are crucial: Enhanced Charging Infrastructure: Expanding and optimizing the charging network to support the growing number of EVs. Skilled Workforce Development: Investing in training and education to equip professionals with the necessary skills for EV technology. Policy Support: Implementing supportive policies and incentives to encourage both production and adoption of EVs. Sustainable Supply Chains: Ensuring a sustainable and reliable supply chain for essential materials like lithium and cobalt. This week's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, We need a refreshed approach to deliver diverse decarbonisation As we hurtle towards the general election on 4 July, all major political parties have published their manifestos and it’s promising that the UK automotive industry features prominently across them – with ambitions to boost our transition to zero emission mobility and manufacturing. It’s so important, therefore, that the challenges and opportunities of heavier commercial vehicles, buses and coaches are given thorough thought. General elections are fought on national and local issues, and our sector has a role to play on both levels – with the buses and coaches that are vital for getting people to work, the shops, hospital, on holiday, and seeing friends and family; while trucks and vans that are the backbone of the economy, integral to the success of so many businesses in our country. SMMT’s Manifesto 2030 calls for net zero mobility for everyone, and that must include all passengers and fleet operators – no matter whether a person can drive, whatever their choice of transport, and however many vehicles they operate. As we have set out, attractive incentives and infrastructure that help fleets invest in the very greenest vehicles are critical to keeping a greener, fairer, more prosperous and inclusive Britain on the move. Commercial vehicle and bus manufacturing too needs policies that create the best possible environment for green investment, and affordable, sustainable energy, strong trading relationships around the world, and healthy new vehicle markets here in the UK will all help make sure more electric and hydrogen vehicles are produced here in the years to come. And for those vehicles used here – be they truck, bus or van – we need plans in place to support the infrastructure needed to keep them on the move, both at depots, and out on the road. Delivering the workforce and skills we need for a net zero future is also massively important, from greater STEM education in schools to policies that help businesses invest in new roles, be it apprenticeships, reskilling or career returnships, given many of the specialist skills needed in the commercial vehicle sector. With a new parliament, we need a renewed and refreshed approach to accelerating decarbonisation – one that reflects the diverse needs of our industry.
