Happy Juneteenth Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name “Juneteenth” references the date of the holiday, combining the words “June” and “nineteenth.” We must never forget or sweep away this heinous part of our history. Only when we remember the past can we truly work towards a better future. https://lnkd.in/dJVDj3N

Imagine reading a long, intense novel. The main conflict is resolved towards the end, but you don’t reach the final chapter until much later. This last chapter contains crucial information that ties everything together, providing closure and a deeper understanding of the story. Without reading this chapter, you can't fully grasp the significance of the resolution. Similarly, while the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom. Juneteenth represents that final chapter—when the promise of emancipation truly reached all enslaved African Americans, providing closure and a fuller realization of freedom. Just as the final chapter of a book is essential for complete understanding, Juneteenth is crucial for acknowledging the true end of slavery in the United States. Watch the video and pass it along to someone who wants to be and do better. https://lnkd.in/eRBvTm3E

Indigenous Peoples Day Reflection. At our public dialogue events, we usually begin with a Land Acknowledgement Statement (LAS). Over the years, I've heard some white folks of European ancestry question this practice, saying such things as: "we won the war and this is how history is made" or "why should I feel guilty for what my ancestors or other white Europeans did?" First, let me be clear that I do not believe guilt is ever a positive motivator. Nor do I believe that any whites/Europeans alive today can be held responsible for the deeds of past whites/Europeans. What I aspire to do with a LAS is to encourage folks 1) to learn about both the sufferings and strengths of Indigenous cultures past and present AND 2) to think about how current practices mimic previous colonialist misdeeds and still impact Native Americans who live amongst us today, the earth, and all of us human beings. In other words, I hope that a LAS will invite us to explore the complexities of our history and to continue to learn about the particular Indigenous cultures that inhabited and still inhabit the area we call home. With that knowledge, we are better able to take practical steps towards advancing justice and equity for Indigenous individuals and tribes who continue to dwell amongst us today. I also like to offer up resources to help us towards this goal. A couple of my favorite are: https://www.mcnaa.org/ https://lnkd.in/d5ekAGu and https://lnkd.in/ewb2Ksfh I'd love to hear your comments about what works for you in a LAS. And feel free to share any resources you'd recommend to promote justice for Indigenous people.
