The white paper highlights how the #automotive industry can embrace the #circulareconomy principles and business models and outlines 10 ways automotive #businesses can become more circular. 52 percent of the 15.3 million passenger #vehicles registered in Australia in 2023 were manufactured in the last 10 years, so about #half of all Australian passenger vehicles are only a #third of the way through their life. This figure includes 72,250 electric vehicles - a 114% increase since 2022. Sally asked "What happens to these perfectly good vehicles if they are traded in to purchase new electric vehicles? Are they sold locally on the secondhand market, #scrapped or exported to emerging economies to live out their designed life?" "Carbon and associated equivalent emissions from a vehicle's tailpipe are not the only measures for a #decabonisation plan… Material extraction, solid, liquid, gaseous #emissions and particulate wastes during #manufacture and use are vital considerations.” "The circular economy includes #remanufacturing as an integral approach to keep materials in use for longer at their highest utility. #Onshore remanufacturing ensures that we localise and maintain materials in Australia, with the associated socio-economic benefits. “From an environmental perspective, fewer #materials need to be extracted to manufacture new engines; less #energy is required as compared to the recycling and smelting process and fewer vehicles or parts are exported for use or processing elsewhere," Sally said. This is our own Jan Duchateau (at left) with colleagues from Maastricht University - Faculty of Science and Engineering (UM) and ARN (Auto Recycling Nederland), visiting an #automotive shredder’s facility in the Netherlands. The visit helped us kick off a new collaborative project with UM’s Circular Plastics team and ARN – focused on exploring the possibilities to optimize and enable increased automotive #plastics #recycling from ELVs (end-of-life vehicles). This project is one additional way in which we are striving to help the automotive industry respond to calls for increased rates of recycling, manage and create more value from ELVs, and move towards circular and more sustainable solutions. #sustainability #circularsolutions #circularity

Automotive OEMs Closing the Loop at the ISRI/ReMA National Convention Developing a Circular Economy for the Automotive Industry requires connecting Automotive OEM experts with Vehicle End of Life Expert Dismantlers and Recyclers. Thanks to Amanda Nummy, Eric Walker and Hendrik Mainka, Dr.-Ing. for participating in the Panel Session at the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA)(ISRI) National Convention titled Automotive OEM Sustainability Driving Demand for Recycled Plastics.
