#DYK that more than two thirds of our emissions come from the ingredients that make up our products? This is why we work closely with farmers in the UK who supply milk for products including KitKat and Nescafé Frothy Coffees, to support them to protect and enhance their land to have a long term impact. Kate Edley and Katrina Harrison, from our Nestlé Professional business, recently joined Bidfood to talk about regenerative agriculture and how we’re working with not only UK farmers, but those further afield to improve the carbon footprint in our entire supply chain. The Hidden Hurdles of Dairy: Scaling Up Sustainably Building a sustainable dairy supply chain has its challenges! While everyone loves fresh milk, the journey from farm to factory can be complex, especially for small producers. Here's why: 1. Finding & Empowering Pastolists: Connecting with remote pastrolist communities and providing training requires significant investment. 2. Logistics & Infrastructure: Efficient milk collection requires specialized equipment, transportation, and central aggregation points – a hefty upfront cost. 3. Temperature Control: Maintaining proper chilling throughout the supply chain demands specialized infrastructure for both on-farm and transportation. These hurdles can make it difficult for new players to enter the market. What are your thoughts? How can we create a more inclusive and scalable dairy industry? #dairy #sustainability #agriculture #supplychain

Urban farmers markets epitomize an environmentally-conscious lifestyle—home-grown vegetables, paper bags, the occasional beetle in your organic raspberries. Surely nothing could be better for the climate than buying food grown literally just around the corner? But conventional agriculture is now immensely efficient, and operates at a scale that makes pea-patch spuds look like very small potatoes. https://lnkd.in/gjjRrQ2D

According to the #USDA, ~30-40% of the US food supply is wasted each year. That equates to around 133 BILLION lbs, or $161 billion worth of food. And where does it go? Landfills. Fortunately, there are companies finding alternatives. For today's #feelgoodfriday, we're highlighting a #nextlevelrecycling program. Among Denali's various organic recycling programs, they take unused pet food and keep it in the agricultural economy by converting it to animal feed. The benefits of this include: ♻ Reduces waste that ends up in already over-stoked landfills 🐮 Provides lower cost alternative to traditional animal feed sources 💧 Helps reduce demand for land and water resources needed to product feed crops Recycling isn't just about packaging, it's about what's inside too. The sustainability of smallholder supply chains is top of mind for corporate leaders in the food and agriculture sectors, whether they are consumer-facing companies or suppliers and exporters of tea, cocoa, coffee, hazelnuts, meat, dairy, palm oil, and many other crops and products. Ensuring the long-term supply of high-quality and sustainably produced crops is a fundamental pillar of the future competitiveness of all companies operating in these smallholder sectors. https://lnkd.in/dFMwARij #sustainability #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #smallholdersectors #smallholderfarmers #food #agriculture #climatechange #climateresilience #climateadaptation

Did you know that byproducts of almond production can be used to make sustainable shipping pallets, "carbon black" for tires, and even serve as pest control? California produces 80% of the world's almonds, resulting in a significant amount of waste in the form of hulls and shells. Traditionally, hulls were fed to dairy cows and shells were used as livestock bedding. However, with the dairy industry shrinking in the state, many almond processors are now facing the challenge of managing this waste. In response, the Almond Board of California and the USDA Bioproducts Research Unit have been exploring innovative ways to repurpose almond byproducts over the last decade. For instance, one research team has developed a method to use almond shell waste to produce shipping pallets, following a three-year study into the chemical makeup of hulls and shells. Learn more about how researchers are turning California's almond waste into valuable upcycled products here: https://lnkd.in/ggM72QWQ #foodwaste #upcycling #california #circulareconomy #almonds
