Is it too much to hope that our national media ends its obsession with Team GB’s ranking in the Medal Table during the Paris Olympics? This quadrennial measure of national virility distorts sports funding from mass participation sports, with relatively few medals available (especially team events), to more niche and less internationally competitive events which offer plenty of medals. There is nothing wrong in supporting the ‘sitting down sports’, such as rowing, sailing and track cycling, with government and Lottery money but funding decisions should not simply be driven by the need to win more medals than other countries. We are facing a growing obesity and inactivity crisis in the UK. This has been compounded by a significant decline in investment in grassroots sport, especially by local authorities. There are many good reasons to fund our elite athletes as part of a broader strategy to encourage mass sports participation, but the need for Team GB to secure a higher ranking in the Medal Table should not be one of them.

As the dust settles after the Paris Olympics, and the homecomings are all done and dusted, it is exciting to think what the Team Ireland performance will do to the sponsorship and media landscape here. Having worked in football both on and off the pitch, it is notable how prominent footballers are in the realm of commercial work – well in the UK anyway. In Ireland, attention has instead always drawn to Rugby for good reason, alongside perhaps the top dogs in GAA, when it came to brands engaging sportspeople. Brands decide on who they engage based on success and winning. But now, alongside Rugby and GAA, you have highly-marketable players coming through the Irish football system – Evan Ferguson, and more recently Jake O’Brien being among the generation that Irish football fans will hang their hopes on, and brands will gravitate towards. The Ireland WNT bucked the trend of footballers not seeing any commercial activity in more recent times, and rightfully so, with the likes of Sky and Cadbury getting on board with amplifying the women’s game in Ireland after the World Cup last year. This summer’s games may now have thrown the book out, with this new generation of successful Irish people, winnng the headlines – and perhaps the commercial deals in the process. Gold medals for swimmer Daniel Wiffen, the rowing duo of Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan, gymnast Rhys McClenaghan and Ireland’s greatest Olympian, Kellie Harrington, partnered with the national interest in the track exploits of the likes of Sharlene Mawdsley and Rhasidat Adeleke, will have injected new focus on sports sponsorships in Ireland. Powerful role models, inspiring young people throughout the country. PUMA Group secured Sharlene early – even before qualification – with an eye on her potential and possibility of donning their shoes at the Games. Daniel Wiffen, Kellie Harrington, Mona McSharry, Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy are all highly marketable people, and it is likely that brand engagement will sky rocket over the next six months. Ireland’s marketing landscape needed this injection. Australian high performance athletes, coaches and staff are being invited to have their say on reducing inequality and increasing opportunity in Para-sport through an online survey. The Understanding Barriers to Entry and Progression in the Paralympic Pathway Survey has been designed to capture the perspectives of both Para and able athletes and role holders that support Para sports. Facilitated by the Australian Sports Commission and Paralympics Australia, the survey is part of a key commitment of Australia’s High Performance 2032+ Sport Strategy to reduce inequity of opportunity for Para athletes and create an environment that allows them to make the most of their talents. https://lnkd.in/guWC-BqM

The Paris Olympics showcased the epitome of sportsmanship with elite US athletes like Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles bowing down to Brazil's Rebeca Andrade in a display of grace and respect this week, after she won Gold. These athletes serve as shining examples of perseverance and humility in the face of competition. Reflecting on these stories, it's inspiring to apply the lessons of teamwork and resilience to real life, especially when guiding our children through challenges. As my daughters navigate different sports camps this week, one facing familiar friends at Cheer Camp and the other unfamiliar territory at Basketball Camp, I'm reminded of the valuable lessons sports teach us. Here are some of the things I've shared with my kids: ~You’re going to work on teams that won’t always gel. This is life. ~There will be others that you may not like, that may be on the court or in your work place! You can’t always have the perfect team or perfect job, but you don’t just quit because of that. ~Talent is a small part of winning. The bigger part is practice and your effort.  ~The more you do something, the easier it becomes. When you do it over and over and over, you feel more confident. The picture was taken at the Coaches Tour to Argentina and Uruguay at the Training Center Academy from C.A. de F in Montevideo, Uruguay. We are able know all the training facilities and watch the training from the U20 team. Competitive soccer often comes bundled with immense pressure. From the expectations of coaches, parents, teammates, and oneself to the desire to succeed and stand out, it's a constant weight on players' shoulders. This pressure can stem from various sources—fear of failure, the pursuit of perfection, or the drive to meet external standards. Striking a balance between competitiveness and enjoyment becomes crucial. Too much pressure can stifle creativity, hinder decision-making, and even lead to burnout. Managing this pressure involves cultivating a healthy mindset, embracing mistakes as learning opportunities, and remembering the joy that drew players to the sport in the first place. Malaysia Paralympic Council (MPC) president, Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin has called on local corporate sponsors to support national sports associations (NSAs) based on their performances and not solely on their fanbases. Speaking to Scoop, Megat said that corporations should practice meritocracy, KPIs and think twice before funding NSAs that fail to bring any results with their funds. “It’s time for all local corporations to stop funding NSAs that don’t produce any results to shift their focus on associations that bring pride for the nation. “In terms of results and bringing pride for the nation, MPC has always been consistent as we always deliver medals and our athletes always qualify to participate in the Paralympics, unlike certain NSAs like the Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) who have once again failed to qualify for the Olympics. #corporatecommunications #corporatesponsorship #corporatemarketing #business Read more 👇

The 2024 Laureus World Sports Awards have come and gone, and unfortunately, South Africa walked away disappointed. Despite four nominations, no one emerged victorious. The night definitely belonged to Spain, and not simply because they were the hosts but also because of all their remarkable achievements in women's football and beyond. Congratulations to the Spanish women's football team and Aitana Bonmatí for their well-deserved wins. Their victories underscore the power of teamwork, dedication, and passion in sports. Rafa Nadal's Fundación Rafa Nadal also shone bright, receiving the Laureus Sport for Good Award for its impactful work empowering youth through sports and education. Nadal's commitment to making a positive difference is truly inspiring.
