"Over the past 30 years, battery costs have fallen by a dramatic 99 percent; meanwhile, the density of top-tier cells has risen fivefold. As is the case for many modular technologies, the more batteries we deploy, the cheaper they get, which in turn fuels more deployment. For every doubling of deployment, battery costs have fallen by 19 percent. Couple these cost declines with density gains of 7 percent for every deployment doubling and batteries are the fastest-improving clean energy technology." We're proud to share a significant advancement in #electricmobility. The COBRA partners have developed Spain’s first large-format cobalt-free lithium-ion battery prototype! 🇪🇸 💡This innovation, in its pre-commercial phase, has been co-funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program, with a budget of nearly 12 million euros. 🔋Currently, the prototype stands between levels 5 and 6 on the Technology Readiness Level (#TRL) scale. 🌱 A key aspect of this development is the elimination of #cobalt, a pollutant, from the battery's manufacturing process. Jordi Jacas Biendicho, a senior researcher at IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya and the project coordinator, highlights the challenge of replacing cobalt - a metal that enhances battery durability and charging speed but is expensive, toxic, and heavily reliant on African countries. ♻️ In line with Europe's sustainability and #recycling standards, our team has innovated new electrode formulations using recycled silicon from photovoltaic panels. We're proud to achieve a recycling rate of 90-95% for the cell components, enhancing the safety and sustainability of the entire value chain. The hunt for safer, more cost-effective energy storage solutions continues to attract significant investment. Case in point: UNIGRID Battery, a startup developing advanced sodium-ion batteries, has just secured $12 million in Series A funding. What's exciting about this development is the potential for a new battery chemistry that could rival lithium-ion in performance while offering advantages in cost, safety, and raw material availability. UNIGRID Battery's CEO, Darren H. S. Tan, claims their sodium-ion batteries can match lithium-ion in size and power output, but with a lower risk of thermal runaway. The implications for data centers and other critical infrastructure are profound. As Tan notes, "Sodium-ion should not just be like lithium-ion, it should be way safer such that we can put it in buildings, hospitals, data centers, so we can achieve widespread distributed energy storage." With commercial-scale orders already in hand, UNIGRID Battery's progress bears watching. It's a reminder that innovation in energy storage is accelerating, driven by the demands of our increasingly electrified and data-dependent world.
