9:30 EST on May 27th 2020 was a very dark hour for me. I lost my dad to COVID-19 after he fought the deadly disease for 42 straight days in a care home. There is a masked picture of me 👇 driving down from Chi town 2 days earlier, on May 25th(everything was closed & I had to get a rental 🚘 from the airport). I drove 5 hours south hoping that I could see him one last time. With the help of a nurse inside the facility, I only managed to see him via a face time connection(he was unconscious). I was in the care homes parking lot not even 30 yards from my father as he was lying down & fighting for his life. I was so close yet felt so far. It was a 2 minute one way call. What u might not know, back in 1987 he helped me get out of Iran as a 16 year old so I could have a better life. If it wasn't for him & my mother, I would not have come to this amazing country ❤️ 🇺🇸. WHY it was so important for me to drive 5 hours south knowing that I will not be able to see my father, specially in person. It was my duty & the least I could do. I owed him that much. I stayed in that parking lot for 2 hours not leaving my car, praying for his recovery. At 11pm that night I drove back to Chi town in the middle of the night with no sleep. I made a few stops along the way but I got back to chi town around 5am. He passed 9:30 EST on May 27th a day that I will NEVER forget. A deadly disease that has taken 1 million+ innocent 🇺🇸 lives since that day. 4 years ago this time: 1) Unemployment was around 13.3% 2) We were being asked to inject bleach in our arms 3) Science was being attacked every day 4) We didn't have access to a life saving vaccine (built by science). 4 years later, I see the non stop attacks on science, the proliferation of conspiracy theories and misinformation has rapidly expanded on many social media sites including LinkedIn. Some folks have completely normalised lying and to my absolute shock, they lie with a straight face about climate & many things(now happening every single day). I am still extremely angry 4 losing my dad but am channeling all of my anger 4 the BIG #climate fight we have ahead. Yes he had Parkinson's disease & was in a care home but he could HAVE been around for another 10 years. We have lost our humanity when certain people tell me well ur father was too old 😡. As an immigrant AND hard working, tax paying citizen, I cherish everything we have in this great country. It's why so many other immigrants came here. The land of opportunity 🗽. Back in the late 60's/early 70's, my amazing dad led a project in the southern state of Khuzestan(south of Iran) a state the size of Texas to plant millions of🌲's across the entire state(picture of dad + Iranian Shah). My dad is calling me to do the same 💪 You left us dad, but u never left me. Your #leadership inspires me daily and I am trying to walk in your footsteps. I ❤️ u & miss u. Say hi to mom. May the network ⚡️ force ALWAYS be with me. Your #NetworkSommelier 🦅 💥 🚀

Thank you Amir Rafizadeh for sharing a sadly wonderful story. It is all too easy to dismiss or forget the terrible impact COVID had on everyone. Take Care Amir.
